hiii i was just wondering if you have any good resources on neopolitan dialect? my family is from napoli, and they all speak dialect, but i never could catch on and i want to learn. thanks so much :)

In Naples, being called a monster is a compliment

One thing I have always found fascinating about the Neapolitan language is how people would use “mostro” as a compliment. Aside from the fact that it is always funny when someone outside Naples hears a Neapolitan call someone a “monster” without insulting them, its origin is somewhat particular.

You see, this “mostro” doesn’t come from Latin monster, but from another word of the same language, “monstrum”. 

That word means “awesome, terrific” and similar things that convey the feeling of “this is like something that brings fear, but in a positive way”. the two English words I used aren’t just a casual translation, but they have the same meaning. After all, have you ever noticed how English has “awesome” and “awful”, or “terrific” and “terrible”? 

So, if you happen to visit Naples, and someone says “you’re a monster”, don’t worry, it’s a compliment

I don't know shit. What I know is that my mood today is Neapolitan. What does it mean? I don't know, but it is probably the reason why I have been talking (*yelling) in Neapolitan the whole day, as if I were an old Neapolitan lady talking to her family members.
