Ital Tek // Yesterday Tomorrow Today
Those who enjoyed last year's Severant by Kuedo will be pleased to know that Planet Mu has something similar released this year too. Ital Tek's new LP Nebula Dance deals with the same lightweight footwork, as evident on the closer Yesterday Tomorrow Today.
Since the release of MachineDrum's Room(s) last year, I have had a somewhat disappointing reltionship with juke music. The heavier side never quite seemed big enough, seemingly relying on the tempo of the music to create interest rather than interesting song writing. On the other side, the laidback productions were often bland. Was I hindering my opinion with an unfair work as my standard comparison? I loved Room(s). It easily made my top ten albums of the year last year, but the fact that nothing seemed to compare seemed more evidence of my inability to find good juke than the overwhelming skill of Machinedrum.
My discovery of Ital Tek' album Nebula Dance has given me proof that others are able to release captivating sounds in the genre. Ital Tek's efforts on this album manages to keep the fast repetitive drum work of juke fresh for the length of the LP. The tight, frenetic pockets of juke drum programming sit as light froth amidst an otherwise gently slowing sea of soft pads, light twinkles, and heavy reverb. The album is most definitely worth checking out as an entire work.
The track with this post is an alternative version of Discontinuum, which appears on the album.
