hello :D i got two pics for you today! hope you're doing well :) (i have no idea what the spiral thingie in the second picture is, thought you might)

on a side note, i went on a deep dive about lightning and thunder yesterday, and i learned about the cloud type cumulonimbus flammagenitus (one of your fav clouds if i remember correctly?), super interesting stuff!

I'm doing alright, thanks! Yes, flammagenitus (aka pyrocumulus, which is a cool as hell name), is my favourite! The way it forms is so fascinating!!!

Image 1 has cumulus congestus and cirrus spissatus clouds.

Image 2 has cirrus spissatus fluctus with virga, cirrus uncinus homomutatus and cirrostratus nebulosus.

Now, that little wormlike cloud could be one of a few things I think! What i think is most likely is a virga being pushed around by some strong winds. It's still odd, especially given how localised and long it is, but still very much possible!

Hello wise cloud person!

Ive noticed you also classify fog alongside clouds (which makes sense ofc seeing as fog is clouds) but i was wondering - are there different types or is it all just one classification thats basically "cloud that makes fog"?

Hello!!

Pretty much all fog is considered Stratus (aka, clouds that are any height between the earth's surface and 2km/6500ft), with the only exception I can really think of being some particularly dense mist or sleet.

But! That doesn't mean there aren't a few subcategories we can sort into!

Most fog is gonna be Stratus Nebulosus, especially if you don't live that high above sea level. But all other stratus clouds would also be considered fog if you're in the middle of it.

Translucidus and Opacus are whether you can see the sun or moon through the clouds, with Translucidus being yes and Opacus being no. Some definitions also include whether you can see higher clouds, too. Not every image I come across will have a sun or moon in frame, so Ill sometimes make an educated guess based on how dense the fog is, or how much obvious sunlight I can see on the fog itself.
