Nedseil is canon Disney said so
So I sat down to watch the 1954 Disney movie version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and uh… I think someone working on that film shipped Nedseil.
The movie itself is much more “underwater adventure with occasional moral quandaries” and less of the book’s “man excitedly lists fish species for seven months” and it makes Ned Land more of the main character, with Arronax in a supporting role. Kirk Douglas, who played Ned, played the leading man in a number of other action-adventure films of that era, and it’s only him and Nemo (James Mason) who appear on the movie poster.
Anyway, Ned definitely the most sexualized character, often appearing shirtless and in tighter-fitting costumes than the rest of the cast. And of course, the archetypal Sexy Leading Man typically has a love interest.
Here’s their meet-cute about 10 minutes into the film, in which Ned walks across the deck of the Abraham Lincoln eating a banana, and pulls a second banana out of his pocket, offering it to a seasick Conseil. Here’s a screenshot of Conseil sizing up Ned’s banana in a way that definitely doesn’t symbolize anything.
It is, admittedly, unclear if they are roommates in this adaptation or not. There’s an extra bed in Arronax’s room but Ned’s room also has bunk beds, and Conseil is seen hanging out in both.
However, when Conseil DOES go into Ned’s room at one point, we get shirtless Ned smirking at him while twirling a rope at waist height, which is certainly a Directorial Choice.
Fellas, is it ever NOT erotic to pin someone against the wall when you’re mad at them (and also still shirtless?)
There is simply no heterosexual explanation for this
Or this little hesitation after a handshake but before an awkward head pat.
These guys have Feelings, ok?
Also Nemo has a pet sea lion named Esmie in this version and she’s perfect and I love her.
