I’m already a raw nerve, overexposed and happy. This day, this perfectly September day is filled with blue skies and a consistent cool breeze. I’m overstimulated with coffee and things to do before leaving for a wedding in two hours, but this day!

I’ve known the bride-to-be since she was born. She’s amazing, and she grew up hanging out with my kids. Her dad is one of my best friends, and we all spent so much time together. I’m on a cinematic loop of “an old man remembers.”

I remember my five-year-old son pushing my almost-two-year-old daughter in a stroller for almost two miles to go stay with this best friend’s family when pipes burst and flooded our kitchen in the house we were renting. My wife was in class, finishing college and rightfully had the car. We didn’t have cellphones, so I left a note. I remain so proud of my son for his slog in the August heat. Like he knew I was carrying all the bags and “kid supplies.”

We were all in it together. We would later visit my friend and his kids in the “divorced dad apartments,” where everyone went swimming and the kids fell asleep, and he and I would stay up late playing Halo and half-talking about his wife and undiagnosed mental illness and what to do next and her hitting him in the head with her daughter’s guitar in front of the kids and the chaos and the how did I get here. (We’ve all recovered and are friends, FYI.)

His daughter is amazing, and I can’t wait. I just want to say out loud that this will wreck me. I really appreciate you strangers, you beautiful weirdos. I hope your Saturday pulls out all the toxins. Xo!
