The installation above is my end piece for the Metaphors project which I have been working on at university over the last few months. This installation is simplistic and can not be understood properly without viewing it in person. The acrylic placards which are hung each with a oxygen mask symbolise a lot for me in this installation. They each had a name of the a victim or shooter on them with the typical information which would go on a evidence label for the police. This than links back to the forces and guns, and how there was a officer on campus at the time but chose not to go into the building as it was too dangerous... The reasoning for the piece to include two torches is so that i can give the viewer a clue into the concept that if we do not notice the smaller details and things than the shadow of the past will always be there...

So there was altogether, including the two shooters, 15 victims from the massacre which lost their lives. That is my reasoning for having 15 of each of the acrylic placards and the oxygen masks. I tied up the 13 victims which were shot by the shooters as it symbolises that they had no choice, they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and the two shooters oxygen tubes were left untied as they chose to shot themselves after the massacre.

The installation was formally set not to only show how sad this type of case is and how it is almost a memorial of the victims. But also to show how the government and presidents view these cases and victims... They seem to all say the same things when told to speak out about the shootings.. “We are terribly sorry to hear of this type of shooting to happen again. Things need to change to ensure the safety of our children of America.” Than nothing happens.. its almost like the victims are just numbers and this case is the same as yesterdays give the same talk and soon enough the public will forget again. Things need to change now! This case was 19 years ago, yet it is so relevant to the problems we are still having today in America.
