wow finally someone else who just despises the whole Ally thing. Feels like 1 person started and then a lot of writers started copying it despite it having 0 basis in canon. I just cannot...

It wouldn't nearly be half as grating if it wasn't for Alex CANONICALLY saying she prefers "Alex". I mean, still grating, but it'd be at 9 instead of 18 on a scale of 1 to 10.
Yeahhhh, that’s my biggest issue with it. 99% of the time it has no context whatsoever and it’s the exact opposite of the preference Alex herself has expressed, so then it just smacks of bad characterization.

The person who came up with it (a very loved ff writer) they explained it in their fic, and it felt nice. Sadly many ppl copy a lot of what this great writer does in their fics, and I personally can only stand the nickname from them and only them. From anyone else it feels fake and forced. :/
See, having a story behind it makes sense! It’s one thing when people create a logical reason to justify a story choice that isn’t part of canon, but it’s another entirely to throw a character change out there awkwardly just because you feel like it. I totally agree with you, it ends up ringing false.
(And please take note, Supergirl writers who borrowed Mon-El from the comics and did ... whatever hack job you did to him.)
