Tenten and Her Relationship with Neji Hyuga According to Her Genjutsu Dream

  Okay, I wanted to talk about this for awhile now, but after watching Tenten’s genjutsu dream (NS episodes 427-428) I figured this was the best time to discuss this seriously.

 I have heard several people deny how Tenten feels about Neji, as they conclude that Tenten doesn’t show any emotion during his death. It was hard for myself to accept that she didn’t shed as many tears as Lee did, but, then again, I think people forget who Tenten is on the inside. 

  Tenten was obviously impacted by his death and I believe her reason for not crying in front of his corpse was because they were in the middle of the war. If you pay closer attention to Tenten, you can see how strong she wants people to see her as. She already feels like the backup on the battlefield, inferior to Lee and Neji and often sees herself as useless. 

  Many times, Tenten doesn’t see herself as the stronger member of the team and will beat herself up over it. Because they WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF A WAR she knew that crying wasn’t happening. If there was going to be someone who would be strong in Neji’s place, it would be her. 

  In fact, I believe that Tenten understood that this was Neji’s final decision, to protect Hinata and Naruto from the attack, and to be released from his chains. In their earlier years when Tenten goes to check on Neji after his defeat from Naruto, he takes off his headband and shows her the curse mark and speaks to her about what his thoughts were after battling with Naruto according to destiny. She listens and is obviously moved by what he concludes which brings me to my next topic: her genjutsu.

  Before I cover her Infinite Dream, I want to explain some psychology. Sigmund Freud, a revolutionist in the field of psychology from from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s, was the author of the book, “The Interpretation of Dreams” (1913), which explained why we dream about certain topics during our slumber. Freud said that, “What is common in all these dreams is obvious. They completely satisfy wishes excited during the day which remain unrealized. They are simply and undisguisedly realizations of wishes.”

 It is true that no dream can be factual interpreted. Freud completed this by refuting the claim of his that said we dream what we wish unconsciously during our wake. During Tenten’s dream, one of her wishes was obvious, which was to use her power to save her friends, the village, and the entire world by just working on her own. That was one of the “obvious wishes” Freud spoke of. What was her second wish?

Her second wish was to save Neji.

  At the end of her genjutsu viewing, Neji approaches from behind and says, “It’s okay. The reason why I am alive and that the world is safe is all thanks to you.”

To which Tenten says, “I see... so it’s okay.”

 Furthermore, allow me to say this AGAIN: her second wish was to SAVE NEJI. 

  She didn’t want him to die, like everyone else. Tenten cared about Neji more than people actually give her credit for and her dream is so obvious of that. So what if she didn't break down like Lee did? Tenten is not Lee and she knew that crying on the battlefield wasn’t an option. The only thing she could do was support Lee as he did, because as I said, Tenten and Lee are two totally different people who saw Neji differently, both in a friendly way, and yet one was  based on mutual trust and breaking the barrier (Tenten and Neji). 

  Tenten really did love and care for Neji, to the point of which she wanted nothing more than to save his life in the end. What we often wish and desire are things that we don’t think about every day. She wanted to protect the village for so long and she wanted to show everyone what she was capable of with only herself and the skills she holds. Because saving Neji was included in one of those unconscious desires, her sadness was much deeper than we all concluded, and since it was ranked with her goal to save everyone,(especially him as a separate desire) it proves that her feelings for Neji and her guilt for not being to save him are as strong as her want to be the heroine.

Here’s a fun thing I’ve been wanting to do for a while, which is draw covers for NejiTen fanfiction I’ve enjoyed over the years. Figured I’d pick fanfics that went along with the themes of NejiTen month so starting off with the theme of ‘first meetings’ and ‘childhood’.
