UR FEATURE: Official Lollapalooza Pre-show Nelarusky to Benefit Special Olympics Illinois
by Andrew DeCanniere With just a little more than two weeks to spare until Lollapalooza, an e-mail landed in my inbox about Nelarusky, an official Lollapalooza pre-show, that had somehow managed to fly under my radar. The pre-show got it’s start back in 2007 when Lauren McClusky, then a junior in high school, and her friends were approached by some other friends of theirs who were in a high school band. They hoped to put on a benefit concert and wanted to see if they had any ideas. It was right around then that it occurred to them that the show should be a benefit for the Special Olympics and should be held at the Metro, a well-known concert venue in Wrigleyville. “Back then,” said Lauren, “it was all pretty much high school students attending. That’s kind of how it was for the first three years, and it grew from there. It became part of Lollapalooza, and that took it in a different direction, but it’s been pretty amazing to be a part of that and how it’s grown so much.” Read on, reader...
Getting ready for Nelarusky tomorrow at Metro!
Nelarusky Announcement Party @ Debonair
Though the party started at 9, around 9:30 the Old Style keg ran out, after being the designated drink-ticket beer, which ended up being a blessing. Quick on their feet, the folks bar tending decided on PBR as a replacement. This was a wise move since the party would go until 2 in the morning. There were five artists that would be performing - three of whom would play DJ sets - the occasion being the announcement of the lineup at Lauren McClusky’s sixth annual official pre-lollapalooza show Nelarusky, which benefits Special Olympics and has raised close to $100,000
The lineup was announced earlier on the Nelarusky website and Facebook page, starring headliner Alabama Shakes alongside First Aid Kit, Dry the River, and Filligar, causing an excited stir through Chicagoans and out-of-towners alike. Those in the know RSVP’d to the announcement party on Do312‘s website in order to enjoy no cover and two free drink tickets. Debonair comfortably fit the people there to enjoy pleasant company and fun music. The entertainment itself was of a good variety from the electronica of SUBTEK to the New-wave DJ set of Perfect Kiss - I definitely danced very happily to New Order’s “Blue Monday.”
It was rewarding to see something that we’ve been working on achieve success. The party itself was a benefit for Special Olympics as well and it was great seeing the donation box fill up. The posters - designed by our very own Aaron Sweatt - looked great and several were taken by enthusiastic patrons. Almost everyone at Jeff McClusky & Associates was there - needless to say, it was great carousing with everyone outside of a work environment. That, coupled with a late start today, made for a fantastic evening with good company and good tunes.

Last Week with Interns at JMA
Staff at Jeff McClusky & Associates is still winding down after the most incredible week at Lollapalooza and the success of the sold out Nelarusky concert all rolled into one. The staff helped produced and executed the sold out Cold War Kids - Nelarusky Benfit for Special Olympics concert on August 3 to open Lollapalooza week. The staff also worked at various functions at Lollapalooza and between working and enjoying the bands and aftershows, we had a tired group. Still much debate in the office on the highlights that included Foo Fighters at Metro, Foster The People at House of Blues, Little Hurricane and the Double Door, Beats Antique on the Playstation Stage and the return of Coldplay.
JMA is now recruiting for the Fall interns and are excited about our next group of 7-10 interns for Music Industry Immersion - Fall 2011! Apply to Lauren McClusky and/or Chris Wienke for your ticket to the music business.
