When Draco came home from work, the house was eerily quiet. No lights were turned on and all the fires in the fireplaces were cold as well. A cold breeze blew through the house, making goosebumps appear on Draco’s skin. He shivered.
Sighing, he ran a hand through the hair that had escaped the messy bun he had put it in. This wasn’t the first time he had come home like this. This could only mean one thing.
Leaving his bag by the front door, Draco made his way towards the empty kitchen. The backdoor was wide open, letting in the cool March air. “Of course,” Draco mumbled as he saw Harry’s coat still hanging on the hook by the door. He shook his head and walked outside.
The garden was empty as well. There was no trace of Harry ever being there. Though Draco knew better. This wasn’t the first time, after all.
Careful to stay onto the little path and not dirty his fancy shoes, he made his way further down into the garden. Around him, nature was slowly waking up again. After months of cold rain and snow, small buds of flowers and leaves were already growing back. Draco’s eye even caught a glimpse of purple and blue crocus flowers blooming in the shadow of a tree.
He smiled as he turned around a corner to a more secluded part of their garden. It had always been his favourite place. They had strung fairy lights around and in the trees, covering the small area in a soft, golden hue. And with the leaves filtering the rays of sun shining through in summer, it truly looked ethereal.
Right now, however, there wasn’t much more than the green grass, the small crocus flowers and… a fox?
Draco huffed a laugh, the smile on his lips widening. He should have known.
In front of him, only a few metres away from him, a gorgeous ginger fox was sitting on the ground. Its fluffy tail was wound around his body and his vibrant green eyes were focussed on something sitting on the tip of his nose. Draco squinted his eyes, cursing himself for not bringing his glasses. He could barely make out the periwinkle blue of a butterfly sitting on the fox’s nose.
It was the most adorable thing he had ever seen.
It didn’t take long, however, for the butterfly to take flight again and disappear from sight. The fox turned its head towards Draco, its green eyes sparkling with something familiar, something mischievous. And before Draco knew it, the fox started charging at him. He braced himself for the impact and the fluff in his mouth, but instead, he was met with the brutal force of his forty three-year-old husband knocking him to the ground.
Draco groaned as his head made contact with the hard ground underneath him, though he could not help the smile that was pulling at his lips. “You bastard,” he said, though he wrapped his arms around Harry, who had landed on top of him, his chuckles muffled by Draco’s warm coat.
“Worth it,” Harry laughed. He lifted his head and placed a soft kiss on Draco’s lips, using one of his hands to tuck a strand of Draco’s hair behind his ear. “You should have seen your face.”
“Oh shut it,” Draco said, swatting Harry’s shoulder. They sat up on the ground. “I was prepared for a fox to hit me. Not some old barbarian like you.”
Harry gasped, placing a hand over his heart. “An old barbarian? Me? Draco! How could you say something like that? You have wounded me!”
Draco simply rolled his eyes and stood up from the ground, dusting off his nice pair of trousers. “Stop being so dramatic,” he said. “Anyway, I’ll be in the kitchen drinking a warm cup of delicious tea.” He turned to face Harry who was still sitting on the ground watching him with that cunning glint in his green eyes. “At least then I won’t be freezing my balls off.”
With a deep grunt and a soft chuckle, Harry stood as well, taking one of Draco’s hands into his own. “Mind if I join you?” He smiled sweetly. “I can tell you all about the things I’ve seen on my adventures today?”
When Draco looked at him, at that sweet, sweet smile and those hypnotising green eyes, he couldn’t find it in him to say no. And though he might not ever admit it out loud, he truly enjoyed listening to his husband’s furry adventures.
