Report of Russian navigation gear on German submarines has lawmakers on alert

A report that Russian-developed navigation technology is installed on German Navy submarines has prompted lawmakers to investigate.

(..)According to the Bild am Sonntag report, the German Navy’s association with Transas goes back to 2005. Twitter sleuths this week circulated a photo of a Transas terminal installed on the German frigate Brandenburg as proof that surface ships also were equipped with the technology. A Navy spokesman told Defense News that the potential for security risks was acknowledged inside the service, though details are classified.

Western defense officials have previously acknowledged that navigation services can amount to an Achilles’ heel in military operations. Savvy adversaries could jam the GPS signal, for example, or trick forces by feeding them erroneous position markers.

According to the Bild am Sonntag report, the data encryption level used by the Transas equipment is below that required for military equipment.

P.S. If I remember correctly, “Herr” or maybe Comrade Gerhard Fritz Kurt Schröder was a chancellor in 2005...? It was very “interesting” way how to protect European “values” and security....??? All of the women I spoke with here were well acquainted with Mello’s personal opposition to abortion. But they also knew that while remaining true to his beliefs and his Catholic faith, he has been a public defender of Planned Parenthood, one who has shifted his efforts from blocking abortion to helping women avoid unwanted pregnancies by supporting comprehensive sex education and access to contraception—the same path travelled by politicians from Bill Clinton to Joe Biden to Tim Kaine. As governor of Virginia, Kaine not only backed laws mandating parental consent and banning late-term abortions; he also signed a law that actually did require women seeking abortions to undergo medically unnecessary ultrasounds. He also signed a bill to create “Choose Life” license plates in the state.

Why are Clinton loyalists holding Heath Mello to a higher standard than Tim Kaine?

Last year Ilyse Hogue — along with most liberal Democrats — had a far more more forgiving attitude toward Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, who, like Mello, is personally pro-life. “I am okay with people having a different moral system than I do as long as they don’t legislate that on me or anyone else,” said Hogue in a statement last July, adding, “7 in 10 Americans support legal access to abortion and some of them are like Senator Kaine, who feel personally opposed but still believe that it’s not for a politician to determine for anyone else… I believe Clinton chose Tim Kaine because she trusts the guy, and I trust her.” Of course, Kaine wasn’t just personally pro-life; like Mello, he also had a history of supporting anti-abortion measures as governor of Virginia. As ThinkProgress reported in July (around the same time as Hogue’s statement), while in office in Richmond Kaine had “pushed for adoption over abortion, promoted abstinence-only education, passed a law that required parental notification for minors wanting an abortion, and banned late-term abortion.” ThinkProgress noted, “He even signed a bill to use state dollars to create ‘Choose Life’ license plates, which funded state ‘Crisis Pregnancy Centers’ — facilities whose sole purpose is to dissuade pregnant women from getting an abortion.” So this entire Heath Mello incident appears to be a thinly veiled sectarian attack against Sanders, driven by bitterness and resentment. For the most outraged Democrats, the problem hasn’t so much been that the Democratic National Committee is supporting a candidate who is moderately pro-life — after all, their 2016 vice presidential candidate was moderately pro-life — but that Bernie Sanders (who still won’t call himself a Democrat, much to their chagrin) has supported a candidate who is moderately pro-life. Needless to say, capitulating on LGBT rights or women’s reproductive rights is not an option for progressives — and never has been. If a candidate like Mello were indeed planning to “strip women of basic rights and freedoms,” then Sanders would be well-advised to retract his endorsement and vehemently reject Mello’s candidacy. But that’s simply not the case.

Washington is warning American firms about doing business in Hong Kong

The US government is preparing to warn American companies about the risks of doing business in Hong Kong.

P.S. The authors of the 1997 treaty were already then able to ask those who broke out of the communist system what people who experienced communism thought about the communist “promises” and “treaty”...! At that time, I had to study a course in the history of diplomacy and as part of the studies, we analysed the official text of that agreement! Then there were fresh memories of life in the communist system and a brief summary of our research work: “Bullshit! China's Communist Party will abide by the agreement just until the moment when its economy and army will be strong enough [thanks to technologies and capital invested by the West] to ignore the West. 

After the hot discussions, we laughed at the naïve Westerners quite a lot, although, it looks like we did a good job at the time, much better than the famous foreign affairs "experts" sent to teach us...

P.S. Very good and precise comment! Actually since the collapse of Soviet regime, the “neoliberal” West invested heavily into economy of both dictatorships-China and Russia. Now, it is quite funny to read about West’s “ deep concern”. Ask the question and find out who actually moved the Western industrial potential to China and caused the problem...???
