Why I hate English
The famous British play writer Bernard Show commented on extreme inconsistencies in English spelling. To illustrate his point at a party he wrote a word: “ghoti” and ask guests to read it. Nobody could. Then Show explained that it should be pronounced as “fish” according to the English language rules. Here is his justification:
“gh” sounds “f” like in the word “enouGH” “o” sounds “e” like in the word “wOmen” “ti” sounds “sh” like in the word “revoluTIon”
No wonder kids have problems with conventional spelling and phonics!
Here is a poem that makes a similar point:
The right way to spell the word “Potato” If GH can stand for P as in Hiccough If OUGH stands for O as in Dough If PHTH stands for T as in Phthisis If EIGH stands for A as in Neighbor If TTE stands for T as in Gazette If EAU stands for O as in Plateau Then the right way to spell POTATO should be: GHOUGHPHTHEIGHTTEEAU
