There's a very short very sweaty blacksmith inviting Malthael back to her forge and Rathma has spontaneously remembered that not only do boobs exist, but he is attracted to them sometimes.
Particularly in proximity to the other thing he's attracted to.
Imperius thinks he should consider things that start with four, and quite possibly put Nepherah up to this in the first place.
okay so I know perhaps like 5 things total about them but I would protect nepherah and halastia with all my life and also I'm wondering: what did their first meeting look like and how did they end up falling for each other?
Nepherah would protect you back lmao
Halastia and Nepherah met as many angels and demons do; someone got kidnapped. Buckle up coz it's a bit of a ride to get there.
While not having any true siblings, Nepherah did take on a spiritual little brother in the form of one Tapfurael. Taps is a tall, almost gangly angel who just seems like he never quite grew into his armor. Nevertheless, he makes up for his klutziness with sheer drive and passion. Literally. His signature fighting style involves a lot of fire.
Taps was involved in a battle that went south quickly, and ended in a loss for the Heavens. Loss of territory, lost of a keep...and loss of Tapfurael himself. Oops.
He wasn't even killed either. Double-oops.
It is extremely rare for an angel to be rescued if they are ever caught. Generally it is assumed that they're either already dead, or well on their way to getting there. It's just not worth the time and resources to go back for every soldier who gets left behind on the battlefield.
That said, when half a battalion returned from getting massacred by the Legions of Terror, sans her little brother, Nepherah decided that fuck the regulations and went after him.
Now despite her violent and energetic demeanor, Nepherah rarely sees the actual battlefield. It'll typically be in the form of the quartermaster if she's even involved in a conflict. No one really expected to see her ever again when she stormed off to get Taps, and thus were wholly unprepared for her to storm back into Heaven with...three other angels in tow.
Huh.
Okay.
In all honesty if they weren't so afraid of her going Full Hammerdin on their asses for losing her brother like that, someone might have questioned this strange bit of luck.
Alas, Lacari and Halyssane joined the Army of Valor.
For about two days. Then they seemingly vanished back into thin air, as though they'd never existed in the first place. Which, of course, they hadn't.
Lacrimosa and Halastia, on the other hand, were a pair of demons on the run. They'd seen an opportunity in the form of a rule-breaking angel hellbent on getting her brother back out of Hell, and offered their assistance in exchange for a one way ticket also out of Hell. Nepherah, who doesn't really care one way or another if a demon is slouching around Hell or Sanctuary, said sure, why not. The big one was kinda cute with the way she tried to hide behind her Hell-Knight brother.
Nepherah got them all out, and got the duo to Sanctuary without anyone being the wiser. She wouldn't see Halastia again for a bit, but eventually they were brought back into contact via nephalem shenanigans. They even started writing letters! Turns out Itherael's postal-service really can deliver anywhere in creation, and really won't tattle if you're sending flirtatious missives into illegal territories to people you're not supposed to talk to.
As for their romance, a lot of it happened in the midst of those missives. Eventually, Nepherah makes it down to Sanctuary herself, and eventually-eventually, she and Hally take up residence down the road from the Domestic RatMat Shop in Bramwell. Maybe they'll even crop up in Cantankerous, if I ever get back to writing it lmao
Nepherah drinks way too much angel-caffeine, a trait she shares with Imperius. Actually, a lot of Valor have this issue. You’d think the military would be stricter about everyone’s diets. The bean-water is just too good to pass up though, and comes with the added bonus of waking you up when you need it. Handy!
Several angels wondered what would happen if she went without, and discovered that this typically makes for a very grumpy lieutenant. It was agreed that letting their pint-sized officer have her bean-water was the best course of action.
I suppose you could include ‘throwing fire-balls at mischievous soldiers’ to this bad habit.
Angels don’t exactly have chins under their hoods, so that’s not what Nepherah was scratching. But it was a motion she’d seen Tyrael and some of his mortals do when they were thinking, and accidentally picked up.
“Let’s see. Visiting Sanctuary the first time was pretty exciting.” She mused. “We don’t have dirt in the Heavens. Or apples. Or cows. Or squirrels. They’re all over the place down there though.”
Sanctuary was still too strange and new to be comfortable, but the angel wouldn’t really mind being assigned to it. As with most positions, it would simply take some getting used to.
Her wings flicker in amusement for a moment. “I can see why Imperius hates it so much - place is really quite filthy, and everything looks like an enemy. It’s tough to know when to apply fire.” Of course, everyone knew there was more to the Archangel’s feelings than that. Either way though, Sanctuary being such an unknown did not help its cause. “And why Tyrael loves it. We’d better be careful with the rest of his host, or we’ll end up with an exodus on our hands.”
Actually, she should probably mention that to someone higher up than her. While Nepherah was reasonably sure most of Tyrael’s remaining host were still too pissed with being abandoned to follow their former-leader, things could change very quickly. Sanctuary was interesting, and full of injustices. Not to mention it had been created by one of their own.
That wasn’t exactly her problem though.
“It lost some of its charm on the next few expeditions, possibly due to all the demons. That was very basic, very mundane, you see. Angels of Valor are always getting into fights. The terrain doesn’t really matter.”
Send me a ♠ to have my muse talk about their parents. (or parent figures) For Nephera!
“Parents? Is that one of those mortal food things?”
“No, they’re the people who um. Make you. And raise you - teach you how to do things. Love you and make sure you’re safe.” Zan looks thoughtful for a moment, before nodding determinedly.
“Oh.” Nepherah stares at the human, wings crackling. “We just call those mentors. Unless you mean the Arch, and all the angels who sang me into existence. Then I guess those might be my parent things.”
“Mentors sounds about right.”
“Very well. I might not be the best angel to ask about this - my mentor disappeared relatively early in my life, and then the system bounced me from angel to angel for a while.”
“Oh no, that’s uh- I’d hear about that too.”
“Really? Okay.” If Nepherah was judging the Horadrim’s curiosity, she was doing a bad job of hiding it. “I was alighted to the Host of Valor, and assigned to an angel called Naecerag. She was also of the Host of Valor, but worked jointly under Commander Kolzus of Valor, and Advisor Inarius of Justice.”
“That’s allowed?”
“Not on paper, but she made it work.” There’s amusement in the angel’s resonance. “I was trained in the customs of both aspects for a short while before Naecerag went missing in battle. After that, I was technically Kolzus’s issue, and he dropped me off on anyone who had time.”
“Did you miss Naecerag?”
“I suppose. Angels don’t exactly perceive death the way humans do. I was anxious for her replacement to emerge from the Arch, so that we could train together.” Zan thinks she might be frowning. “Her replacement never emerged, and her name has faded from memory. Such is the Fate of those who followed Inarius to his Sanctuary.”

Nepherah is one of those angels that was born just a few years too late. If she’d been a little bit older, more able to take care of herself, and less liable to tell everyone’s secrets, she might’ve ended up on Sanctuary. Good thing she didn’t, depending on who you ask.
