Check out these amazing sculptures created by Mr. Shepherd-Jones’ 8th grade class! Mahalo nui for sharing with us 😊The students were instructed to go out into their community for a beach cleanup in Waimanalo and create a collage in the image of an animal of their choice threatened by marine debris to raise awareness. We love creative ideas like this that help engage the younger generation in this important issue, after all it’s their future and at the current rate of approximately 8million tons of trash entering the ocean every year there will be plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. Plastic pollution is a major threat to the ocean, an ecosystem which is already under pressure due to human activities and climate change.  For example, coral reefs already face stress from ocean acidification, rising sea surface temperatures and overfishing (Veron et al., 2009). However, a recent study has reported that if coral reefs come in contact with plastic, their chance of catching a disease increases from 4% to 89% (Lamb et al., 2018). This is because plastic harbors a lot of pathogens which can cause disease outbreaks.  It is estimated that there are over 11 billion pieces of plastic on reefs across the Asia-Pacific (Lamb et al., 2018). In addition, the Coral Triangle which holds the world's highest levels of marine biodiversity is at the greatest risk of plastic pollution (Lasut et al., 2017). This will degrade the health of reefs, have harmful knock-on impacts on other marine food-webs, and negatively impact human livelihoods. Therefore, management is essential to help clean up our oceans and prevent the collapse of marine ecosystems.  Let’s try and refuse single-use plastics and recycle - if we all make small decisions in our daily lives it can have a great impact!    Join us on our next beach clean-up (stay tuned to @oneoceanconservation for details) or participate in one in your local area! We’re always sad to see fishing line on the reef but even more so when it’s in an area that’s supposed to be protected from fishing 🤦‍♀️! Keiko Conservationist @nenedeean had to get clever with this one and use the hook to cut as much of the line off as possible but we’ll have to return with a knife to get it all off! Our Hawaii reef and beach cleanups are usually the second Saturday of every month with our partners at @oneoceanconservation x @waterinspired but July’s cleanup will be towards the end of the month on @paditv’s annual #womensdiveday!
