This is a modular quick-reload system (2x18-round mags) for Nerf. The concept was to create a clip system that could be used to add on additional functions, two mags, yes. Light, yes. Body clip, probably. (I haven’t designed it yet, but I’m thinking magnets.) And also, the single side, acts as a great logo panel that just screws on over the mag. Also planning on doing a modified front plate and light assembly with UV LEDs so it can be used to charge glow darts.

I’m not really happy with the lighting assembly, it runs off a 9v, but I’m considering bumping it down to a AA and making the case smaller and more uniform. We’ll see.

Everything was designed in Rhino3D.

I’ll probably start printing this soon, but I can only print 1 piece at a time, it’s just slightly to big to fit 2 on one print job

Dual mag assembly is finished, the new magnets are fantastic, to the point of being over kill. But as has been said in my family more times than I can count, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth over doing. There are 4 31mm by 5mm N52 neodymium magnets giving a combined hold strength of about 36lbs.

A point of note: 19mm is not the same as 9mm

Seems obvious. When you make a resource that should be 19mm wide and make it 9mm wide there is a problem, and somehow I didn’t notice that it was wrong. So, the clips have been recreated to meet the proper thickness of the Nerf Mag. (It’s actually 19.4mm thick, but I need a good extra grip presser to account for the angle created on single side compression, so my actually disgn thickness is 18.5mm) You can see them (sort of) in the previous post with the light box.

The second thing is my belt clip was WAYYYYYYY to small. So, complete redesign there. I like the outcome of the new design, it looks good, sturdy, and stable. Also it should actually be able to support the required weight. When you do the math on magnets, it helps to account for the distance they will be away from each other. The new magnets this is designed around (4| 2x2) give about 19lbs of pressure per set. If that doesn’t hold onto the parts, I may give up on a mag-clip.

Light box had a bit of a problem, to get a decent coverage I needed to point the LED towards to bottom to use the reflection to fill the emblem, problem is that the orange mag changes the color and dims it a lot. So I found a super simple fix for this, I put a little piece of white paper under the LED to reject the light back, nice and strong. And it fills out the emblem quite well now. Yay for quick and easy fixes.

The light box for the Dual Mag Assembly is finished, or at least wired, still need to clean it up a bit. Looks go though, and not very heavy. With a single led it's still surprisingly bright. Designed in rhino 3d, printed on a robo3d r1+

This is the final part I’ve designed for the for the Dual 18Mag MiniStrut Quick Change Assembly System, the Mag-Lock Belt Clip. Or pocket clip, no judgement.

This comes in basically 2 parts, the belt clip and the attachment point. The attachment point, which connects to the MiniStruts has three small, super strong magnets in it along with two positioning dimples so it doesn’t rock around or get dragged off to easily when, say, running.

The belt clip, which is fairly thick and heavy, likewise, has three magnets and two hemispherical protrusions for the attachment point. and is large enough and sturdy enough to not get dragged around to easily. The belt clip is printed in two parts and held together with two M2x5 screws and nuts so as to keep it nice and tight and allow for easy assembly; aka, gluing the magnets in.

I’ve also thrown in an image of all 12 parts of the assembly in an exploded view because it just looks pretty cool.

Here is the new Light Box Assembly for the Dual 18Mag MiniStrut Quick Change Assembly System with an exploded view so you can see how it fits together.

I switched form a 9v with two LEDs to two AA’s and a single LED. the AAs make this so much smaller, just because the profile is about 4mm lower. This little bit allowed me to flatten out the design for better printing and allow a larger plain for the emblem cut, with the added bonus of making it more streamlined smaller, and lighter, although not by much.

As another added benefit of the MiniStrut design, if I use  a UV LED and clear mags, it will charge them nicely as there is no “bottom” to the light box and no panel across the mag.

Inspiration knocked, and when inspiration tries to deck you in the face, you brake out the coffee / vodka and have a long talk. So that’s what I did, I sat down and 4 hours later had multiple parts finished and redesigned because I had one idea that drastically changed everything, the sides didn’t need to be connected. That drops the amount of material down massively and thus the amount I need to print.

I present the Dual 18Mag MiniStrut Quick Change Assembly System.

This assembly holds two mags or multiple attachments for functionality and convenience. More to come soon.
