While I do find it very entertaining, I’m often perplexed by the execution of some science-fiction / fantasy mashups.

I’m talking about stuff like: -and then the protagonists encounter space faeries! -Space faeries?  Oh like- they resemble the faeries of western European mythology but they’re actually aliens? -Yes!  And more than that, the space faeries inspired that very mythology when they visited our planet long ago via a magic portal! -Wait- ‘magic portal’?  Don’t you mean, like, ‘space-time portal’?  Or, ‘inter-dimensional portal’? -No!  A magic portal because they use magic!  They magicked their way from their planet across the cosmos to get to ours! -Oh, you mean that their technology is so advanced compared to ours that it is indistinguishable from magic..? -No!  :D  Magic!
