Yet another friend of mine sent me a bug again today. This is a nessus sphinx, absolutely beautiful and having a tasty treat!!

It must have been delicious! Looks like a nessus sphinx, Amphion floridensis. Here’s a clearer photo:

A Nessus Sphinx Moth (aka “Hummingbird Moth”) at the Chicago Botanical Gardens. At least I’m pretty sure it’s a Nessus Sphinx.

I briefly saw a Nessus sphinx moth today and I wanted to know how it got that name. While the connection is a bit unclear, it seems to be named after a mythological centaur... so here’s a moth/caterpillar centaur/sphinx creature. 🐛

Bug of the Day

A surprising find at my porch light as I was turning off power to the main moth sheet in the wee hours this morning - a Nessus sphinx (Amphion floridensis)! I’ve never seen this species in my yard before!
