Because the UK Conservatives trashed levies on fossil fuels intended to fund energy efficiency renovations, blocked new renewable generating capacity, and privatized the national gas company, in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, Britain now finds itself without a stable supply of LNG going into this winter.

One reporter investigated what it would cost to ‘break up’ with natural gas - by replacing his gas stove and gas boiler, installing photovoltaic panels and heat pumps - and was shocked at the enormous potential cost, far out of reach for working-class people.

Only with serious government action to increase electricity supply and subsidize net-zero new builds / efficiency conversions can the UK get off the LNG treadmill.

It also didn’t help that architectural heritage rules meant he couldn’t install solar panels on his roof. We’re gonna have to get used to things being unpretty to avoid cooking the planet.
