The character Claudia is not spoken about enough by fans and viewers of the show “You”
One of the most intriguing characters to me in the show is Claudia. Which is why I find it astonishing that her story is not spoken about much by viewers and fans of the show. But I think I know why.. The part of her story that I find most interesting is not made clear enough in the show. There's one scene where we get a really great insight into her life, but it was only one scene and it was just mentioned in dialogue. As much as I love the show, I feel like it was bad writing to not have this aspect of the story highlighted more.
When Joe visits Claudia in the hospital he initially confronts her about why Ron is still in the picture after all he has done to her and Paco. This actually reflected how I felt, as I was mad at her. Why on earth would you be prioritizing your boyfriend over your son? I hate it when people do that. But then she explained why.. and Joe was taken aback and apologized immediately.
Ron is a parole officer. He has connections that can see to it that Paco is taken from Claudia's custody.. She doesn't leave him because he will do so if she does. And considering Ron has a law enforcement job.. I mean I'm not the most knowledgeable about cops but would it really be easy to have such a person dealt with?
And I was just like.. wow. That's actually really sad.. Claudia is in a situation where she has to frequently take beatings from a big, strong man or be separated from her child... Heck she is in the hospital at the time because Ron gave her a concussion. In that scene she looks like she's in a lot of pain..
Not that I'm condoning Joe's solution to the problem (killing Ron) but it almost makes you kinda feel relieved when Ron dies.. Having your child taken away from you, especially when its not because of you being a bad parent but rather because your boyfriend can't take being dumped, must be a really hard thing to go through. And being beaten frequently like that must also be a really hard thing to go through.. A situation where you have to choose between two horrific outcomes just feels so awful. Again, you almost feel relief when Ron dies as it saved Claudia and Paco from having to make a grim decision.
Also another thing I'd like to add, is that in real life law enforcement officers often get away with beating their wives and girlfriends due to their statuses. And often with other things, such as killing civilians. Claudia's story is very realistic in the sense that she is a woman who goes through a lot of suffering due to corruption in law enforcement.. It's horrifying to think that there are people like Claudia in this world who get beaten by their boyfriends/husbands and can't do anything about it due to the man's job.
Someone pointed out something I should have mentioned in this post which I agree with. The reason Ron's threats worked is because Claudia took recreational drugs which would obviously get the state involved. Therefore as they put it, its not completely as black and white as I made it out to be. Claudia wasn't 100% innocent in this.
However we did end up agreeing that while it's not good for a parent with custody of a child to take drugs, it should not be grounds for the child to be removed from the parent's custody and doesn't make the parent unfit or a bad one. It's not like an instant deal breaker. Especially considering that Claudia ended up getting off the drugs thanks to Joe and Karen's help, and Ron even seems to note this when he sarcastically thanks Joe for it.
An important part of the conversation I thought needed to be added to this post.
