Classic TV round-up
In their latest batch of announcements about rediscovered old telly, Kaleidoscope have revealed a highly significant find - an audio only recording of Callan: Once A Big Man, Always A Big Man (2.11, Thames, 1969). Part of a job lot of reel to reel audio tapes purchased in a house clearance, this is a brilliant discovery and provides us with another glimpse (if only an aural glimpse) of Derek Bond's tenure as Hunter, much of which is sadly missing from the archives. The same haul also turned up the soundtrack to a contemporary installment of The Eamonn Andrews Show, which features Callan star Edward Woodward among its guests. Kaleidoscope have announced their intention to animate the Callan soundtrack as their next project, once work has been completed on the audio of an episode of Adam Adamant Lives! returned last year.
Other announcements include the securing of an episode of much mocked BBC ferry-set soap Triangle (1981 - 1983). Much maligned by the viewing public and critics alike, the series nevertheless ran for three years. The episode in question has been returned to the BBC, who have confirmed they now hold the entire run of the show - a happy ending for any old TV, no matter its popularity.
The good folk at Network continue their work to upscale previous releases to blu-ray quality. Having recently completed their HD releases of Man In A Suitcase (ITC, 1967 - 1968) and Joe 90 (ITC, 1968 - 1969), they are currently working on releases of Gerry Anderson's Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons (1967 - 1968).
February sadly saw the passing of Patricia Garwood (28.1.1941 - 24.2.2019). Beginning her career as a child actor with a small, uncredited role in The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), Garwood's screen career lasted almost fifty years until her retirement in the late 1990s. Best known for playing Beryl Crabtree in the long running sitcom No Place Like Home (BBC, 1983 - 1987) opposite William Gaunt, Garwood also had a clutch of genre credits to her name - including episodes of Armchair Theatre (1964), Mystery And Imagination (1966), Public Eye (7.12, Fit Of Conscience, 1975) and The Gentle Touch (1980). In later years she continued to work on the stage and in her spare time wrote several books. She is survived by four daughters and ten grandchildren; her husband of fifty years, playwright Jeremy Paul, died in 2011.

*Simply Media have announced plans to release several early BBC adaptations of Charles Dickens’ novels. These include Great Expectations (1967) starring Gary Bond, Dombey & Son (1969) with John Carson as Dombey, and a 1958/9 version of Our Mutual Friend headed by Paul Daneman. More releases are expected to follow. Any release of early BBC material is exciting but the cast and crew of these shows make for a role-call of the very best of British talent from that era. *Network have been quietly working away on a new range of DVDs, launching ‘Forgotten TV Drama’ last month to almost zero fanfare. Curated by a team at the University of London, the range celebrates neglected dramas from the ITV archive. The first release is the exciting sounding The Frighteners, a 13 episode series of individual plays around the theme of psychological horror. Not much has been announced for the future of the range but the next release, excitingly, is Nigel Kneale’s The Crunch, originally shown in 1964 and one of only a handful of single plays Kneale wrote that survives. *In less happy news, the BBC have announced plans to close their BBC Store. Launched only 18 months ago, the Store was the BBC’s attempt to break into the ‘download to own’ market and provided huge amounts of the company’s archive to stream and download, many unseen in decades. From Doctor Who to early Dennis Potter plays, documentaries and interviews of historical significance, and that version of Our Mutual Friend I mentioned earlier, the wealth of material sounded pretty exciting - but the market is a tough one and the BBC were never going to compete with the likes of Netflix and Amazon. The site may be closing down but here’s hoping these shows aren’t just shunted back into storage. Simply Media’s range of Dickens releases provides some small hope. *Finally, the World recently mourned the passing of Sir Roger Moore (14.10.1927 - 23.5.2017), movie star, but several news outlets neglected to celebrate the life of Roger Moore, star of classic TV. Beginning with Ivanhoe (1958 - 1959), Moore became a leading man and gleaned the experience he would need for his later career as a big screen Action Man. In the USA he starred in The Alaskans (1959 - 1960) and lent support to Maverick (1960 - 1961) before returning home and cementing his place as a TV icon, playing the definitive Simon Templar for seven years in The Saint (1962 - 1969). Although his film career was beginning to take off, a promise of one million pounds on a handshake from Lew Grade convinced Moore to take one more starring role for ITC. In The Persuaders! (1971 - 1972) Moore shared top billing with Hollywood heavyweight Tony Curtis. The two didn’t hit it off instantly and tensions behind the scenes, coupled with the expensive production and relatively disappointing overseas performance of the show, meant only one series was ever made. This more or less marked the end of Moore’s British TV work, but he would go on to even greater success as a film star, becoming the longest serving James Bond in cinema history. Roger Moore is survived by his wife, Kristina Tholstrup, and three children. (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/may/23/roger-moore-saint-persuader-and-the-suavest-james-bond-dies-aged-89)
The U.K.’s Network Distributing has sealed a deal with iconic British horror label Hammer Films to form Hammer Studios Ltd. Network’s managi
Intriguing news (and surprisingly nothing from Network yet). This could mean a few things: new films, new restorations, rerelases. The Hammer back catalogue is messy and complex, with rights divided across multiple studios and companies. My highest hope would be for a full restoration and release of the two tv series made with Fox - Journey to the Unknown (ABC, 1968 - 1969) and Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense (Hammer/Fox, 1984 - 1985) - but again, the involvement of Fox could complicate things.
At the very least, I just hope this doesn't interfere with Indicator's excellent work releasing the more obscure entries in the Hammer canon; nobody has done Hammer justice on home video except them really, and I'd like for them to continue.

Uncovering Curiosities: Julie Delpy’s 2 DAYS IN NEW YORK
French filmmaker Julie Delpy’s follow-up to 2 Days In Paris, titled 2 Days In New York is a pleasant enough screwball comedy – think of it as a Woody Allen film made by a neurotic French woman, rather than a neurotic New Yorker. The 2012 film is entertaining – but it lacks real bite. The film follows Marion (Delpy) and Mingnus (Chris Rock) as they try to keep their relationship together during a…
