I like to criticize KJH and his writing but sometimes it feels like people are grabbing one thing for haterisms and pretending there's nothing else.

I've ranted at length about Roland and how frustrating I find him, everyone and their mom can criticize the designs for allowing men to be less conventionally attractive than women. There's this thing where clearly he (and likely other people in the team) find "evil women" hot, and so there's a lot of evil women contrasted with more sympathetic men villains, and so on

But pretending you can boil it down to "he just hates his mom" is a little silly. Like yeah dude was abused, and you can see that because there's depictions of abusive mothers, but there's also fathers, and one thing that stands out to me is that the mothers tend to be more violent ("tend to" because Carmen is not that) and yet conflicted with kindness, while the guys are just kind of self-centeredly sucky but charismatic (Well. I Wouldn't call Ayin charismatic. I guess LC stands out from the rest).

This is, of course, STILL only zooming in on "parents", when the guy has like not a single depiction of a functional couple. When they are, someone dies. Romance always ends bad. Families are always mired with tragedy and violence. It's not JUST parent-to-child

I wonder: do people not do this take on romance because they wave it off as "shipping"? I think there's some really interesting choices coming from a South Korean author considering the state of gender politics there. I think, for example, Don refusing to have kindred is not a minor thing. A woman refusing to have children in an environment that pushes everyone like her to do that.
