World of Warcraft Classic And What We Left Behind
This was a really interesting video despite me not having played WoW in over a decade, and not being a "gamer" in general anyway. I think a lot of his introspection can be applied broadly to matters well outside internet gameplay.
Points of interest (to me, at any rate):
-they sent statues to plankowner subscribers at the 10th anniversary for 10 years unbroken subscriptions
-"outrage merchants" I am totally using this term now
-This Ain't Your Daddy's Horde! (yes it is--he's way more WoW than I could even aspire to...i need to ask him if he got one of those statues now)
-"people tend to be bad at figuring out why they like the things they like, so they just assume their stated values apply to the things they enjoy" omg, I see this SO MUCH in fandom!!
-"if nothing is "meaningful," you are free to self-direct” [meaningful pause]
"paradoxically, adding more content, more structured activities, can make it feel like there are fewer options" I think we all feel this
-"as you add more direction, more structure, the emotional value of self-direction goes down" Yup, also the talk about options ending up feeling like obligations
-discussion of the illusion (and how illusions are great) of self direction and openness when all options suck almost equally--I think this speaks directly to why certain people yearn for the “good ole days” of some yesteryear and/or childhood
F’s in chat are also hysterical
