April 8th: Day 8 Feeling Great..ish, (Guitar Challenge)
Taryn
What I Did:
Tried to figure out what a g chord is (still unclear), Played parts of some Tay Swift, learned new chords. some "let it go"
How I Feel After:
Excited :) Giddy
Day 8 Notes:
After watching the Mindy Project[FUCK YOU CASTELLANO], and some brews with some improv ladies, I sat down with the ol' giiieeetayr.
It was FUN. I sounded painfully bad to my neighbors but it didn't matter. I figured out the major chords for "We are never getting back together" and played them semi-OK. Why is a G chord x32033 on some music and x32003 on others, with no distinguishing major or minor indicators on the sheet music? Mega confusing to me
I do not understand how people can sing while playing correctly, let alone write music and play it and sing it successfully. Anyway, I feel pretty manic because I'm so revved up about being able to play those chords in a sequence that resembled a Tay Swift song I knew.
I knocked on Liza's door and screamed "Am I sounding good?!?!?" No response. "Any better?!??!" Anyway I fully expect her to punch me awake in the middle of the night as payback because she was sleeping when I did that.
Seriously though fuck Danny Castellano, he is a bastard.
Jamie
What I Did:
Practiced new chords and tried to tune by ear (and youtube).
How I Feel After:
Better, not awesome.
Day 8 Notes:
Ok, first of all I'm stoked to learn the guitar is bringing Taryn closer to her lifelong lover and father of her children. Second, guitar is still really hard.
After blowing it yesterday, today I found myself with 40 whole minutes and just me and my (Romeo's)* guitar. This is the first time where I've had to sit with it on my lonesome and try to remember what to do. When I very first strummed, the bottom string sounded off to me so I thought "just bump it a little and see what happens." That didn't really work, but maybe if I tried again. But then -oops!- I bumped that other peg thingy and now a second string doesn't sound right. Of course I turned to YouTube where I listened to someone else pluck their strings like 10 times and tried to turn my pegs to match theirs plucks. (Lots of technical lingo here, so stay with me.) It matched-ish, and I found this helpful program to help me learn more chords! http://www.chordbook.com/guitarchords.php
Teaching ourselves this is tricky! I fumbled through the instructional website trying each note- and I'm entirely convinced "barring" (which is when you hold one finger over each string in one fret- wut?) is just not a thing my hands are big enough to do. For real. Like, not a practice more thing- it's a genetic thing.
Anyway! We picked three songs to work on so maybe I'll be able to see some more growth! We're learning the three songs listed below. I've also linked to some of my favorite weird and wonderful covers of them- but who knows which versions we're going to practice!
Wagon Wheel: Old Crow Medicine Show Let It Go: Disney's Frozen Dancing On My Own: Robyn
*Romeo is the name I gave my bf so I wouldn't have to keep typing 'my bf' like some sociopath, if you recall.
