I’m a little embarrassed that even after Sterling mentioned that Egaeus was Berenice’s cousin, it took me a moment or two to finally recognise who he was from Berenice’s short story

thinking thinking,,, keep thinking,,,,
so imagine the bathroom boys become something more than just background characters and the main cast actually starts interacting with them and it's basically just "why do you look like him"
Duke: You look like the guy who killed me.
Will: You look like the guy who probably killed me.
Berenice: You look like the guy who killed our sugar daddy.
Bathroom boys: what
Keep thinking about this scene in the context of Berenice's possible memory problems.
"as hard to forget as it is to remember"
Imagine that over time she starts to forget about what happened - it's easier for her mind to give up such traumatic memories. At some point Berenice can't even remember why Sterling isn't around anymore.
And Egaeus takes advantage of it, literally gaslighting her.
I prefer to be in denial and hope that Egaeus doesn't actually have some creepy incestuous obsession with Berenice. Maybe he just didn't like Sterling from the start and decided, "Yeah no way, this old creep can't use us for two years and then just throw us away, not on my watch, Berenice get out of the way, we need this money."
