Hello Mr. ENTJ, I hope your family (especially Princess Mango) is doing well! Since you've moved around a lot, do you have any tips for adjusting to new surroundings more quickly, when moving to new cities/country for your job? It's my first time being faraway from friends and close family. Thank you for reading!
We’re doing well, especially Princess Mango who celebrated her 6th birthday yesterday, and I hope you are too.
To your question, the best piece of advice I can give to adjust to new surroundings quickly is full immersion. Don’t act like a visitor or a foreigner when you’re in a new location; do what the locals do and play where the locals play to understand the culture and to absorb the essence of the city as quickly as possible. Off the top of my head:
Learn the local language (including slang and profanity) and use it regularly because communication is the key to building relationships
Ask a friend or colleague who grew up in the area to act as a temporary guide because they can help make the adjustment smoother
Learn local humor and why they find certain things funny, humor is a quick and easy way to gain insight into cultural quirks
Try the local cuisine, especially from restaurants with historic relevance, because food is a powerful indicator of culture and history
Use the same mode of transportation as the locals to gain an authentic understanding of the tempo of life there
Socialize with people who don’t share your exact same background; cities have demographics influenced by their unique histories
Etc.
Avoid living life exactly the way you would at home-- that completely defeats the purpose of relocating and exploring new locations. If you want to feel at home where you’re at, adapt.

I had both an café mocha and a salted caramel apple cider today and quite honestly I think I found my two new favorite non-writing drinks.
Let’s go on a road trip!
