The ART of Creating Controversy at Wellesley College!
The statue, called Sleepwalker (pictured above), is part of a new art exhibit featuring sculptor Tony Matelli at the Wellesley College Davis Museum. The exhibit, New Gravity, features sculptures that are often reversed, upended or atomized. Staged dramatically among galleries on two floors of the Davis, the exhibition will also extend beyond the museum walls to sculptures sited outdoors on campus.
It's been reported that a junior at this all girls college has started a petition at change.org to have this sculpture removed. This reminds me of when the sensation show was in Brooklyn and people were up in arms about that exhibit.
I offer my compliments to Tony Matelli; as this is clearly a successful thought-provoking piece of art. The New York-based artist must be enjoying all the controversy that his work creating. Ha, his realistic looking sleepwalker is doing a better job advertising the New Gravity exhibit, then any real human seems to be ;).
Tony Matelli: New Gravity” will be on view through May 11 and July 20, in various galleries around the Wellesley College campus.
Hope you enjoy!
