Ladakh Gets 5 New Districts in Historic Administrative Overhaul
In a major governance reform, Ladakh is set to expand from 2 to 7 districts after approval for five new ones—Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass. The move, cleared under the leadership of Narendra Modi and local administration, aims to bring governance closer to remote regions.
Officials say this long-awaited decision will improve access to public services, boost local development, and create new opportunities in one of India’s most strategically important regions. Since becoming a Union Territory in 2019, Ladakh has been undergoing rapid administrative transformation—and this could be a defining milestone.
