JOMP Book Photo Challenge || October 23 || Trickster: Charles De Lint’s Newford is full of them!
Imagining how some of my favourite characters might be handling the pandemic:
Pride & Prejudice: Lydia & her large family turn up at Jane & Bingley's place, because their own home "is too small for quarantine, & Jane has such a grand place & anyway she knows Jane won't mind." Jane is too nice to turn them away, & ends up getting Covid. Lizzy is furious & takes a carriage straightaway to be at her bedside without telling Darcy. Their mother hears the news & can't resist turning up, & they all have to be quarantined together. Darcy, still at home, stares at Lizzy's portrait & cries in the bath while servants pour water over his head.
Discworld: Granny Weatherwax isn't actually dead, & uses her magic to fly around as a bird & scold anyone breaking quarantine.
The Raven Cycle (just after The Raven King, spoilers): Adam leaves school & joins Ronan at the Barns. Blue, Gansey, & Henry are temporarily stuck while travelling but Gansey pulls strings & gets them home. Blue & Gansey stay at the Barns, to Moira's disappointment, & Henry ends up at home but sends Bee constantly to see what's going on. They pass the time playing with dream things, & Opal is overexcited & bites everyone.
Angela Carter, Wise Children: Dora & Nora are still alive & are 105 years old. They adopt all of the animals that need homes because shelters have shut down, & end up with a house full of cats, dogs, goats, pigs, ducks, & a long-lived parrot so they guess they'll have to stay alive another 25 years. They pass the time by putting on plays for the animals, but only the ducks pay attention & applaud.
Charles De Lint's Newford collections: Everyone stays at home & makes art. The internet tries to zap someone into the past at one point, but a good-hearted beat cop who's been risking himself to feed the homeless in this time of crisis saves the day & falls in love with the spirit of the internet.
Francesca Lia Block's Dangerous Angels: Everyone returns home & stays in the old cottage & Weetzie is thrilled. Cherokee has kids now & it's crowded but it's just what they all need. They all make a movie together in the back yard, a 1920s-style zombie flick.
Happy birthday to the trailblazing Charles de Lint

All of us at Tachyon wish the extraordinary Charles a happy birthday. May your music forever fill the streets of Newford.
Coincidence?
I wonder if there’s a connection between Joni Mitchell’s album Hejira and Charles de Lint’s Newford books.
I mean there are songs called “Coyote” and “Black Crow” and you get lines like
We got high on travel We got drunk on alcohol And on love the strongest poison and medicine of all
and
W.C. Handy I’m rich and I’m fay And I’m not familiar with what you played But I get such strong impressions of your hey day Looking up and down old Beale Street
At the very least, if they’re not connected, Mitchell and de Lint were tapping into the same spring.
I LOVE the world of Newford. Charles De Lint's novella's in Dreams Underfoot was the first time I met and started to fall for Jilly Coppercorn. She is one of my favourite characters! I would also love to see this series as a Netflix show. The community and characters are so fully developed, I can picture walking the streets of Newford and grabbing a drink with my faves or would do well in a long running into the fae. #NewBookginnings17 Favourite Novella / #GrimDragon Here's why (book series) should be a Netflix show.
