Hot Take🔥 (Because we're just days away and I choose this hill to perish on!) Alpha Centauri's... nice.
When Crowley suggested Alpha Centauri to Gabriel and Beezelbub, he had no intention of eventually becoming their second-star-to-the-right neighbors. He wasn't (just) being NICE.
Aziraphale's double take and you-are-the-love-of-my-eternal-life gaze is because Crowley just literally gave away his dream of running off to the stars. (Bookend Symmetry -- "You gave it away??") He gave away something precious to him, for the sake of Aziraphale and humanity.
Crowley is telling his Angel that, whatever happens next, he's not running away. He's committed to staying and facing it. And like any Old Married Couple that's been together for ages, Aziraphale implicitly understands what Crowley is trying to convey. It's something even deeper than code language... A promise was secretly given, and received.
Gabriel gave up his memory to prevent the Armageddon the Sequel, and to commit himself to Beez. Crowley saw the events unfold in Heaven. He knows it's coming now, and soon. He's fully committing himself to Earth, and even more deeply to Aziraphale and everything he believes in. No more running.
That's why he's in that d@mned alley! In that moment, Crowley promised Azirphale he would stay and do what he could to protect the World. He thought he'd be doing it at his Angel's side. The Metatron changed all that.
Our Ineffables planned on doing it Together -- but until they can fight for the world Together again, Crowley will keep his promise.
