Tech-Knowledge-y: Future Jobs for NYC asks people in New York how technology is effecting the youth today. Asking many people within New York they focus on how technology and its advancements are helping the job market and how education plays a role in new tech. They ask how the new mayor can play a role in both education and technological changes

For the 3rd Annual Digital Waves Youth Media Festival: NewsHive @ St. Joseph's College youths came together to create, report, and edit their own stories on issues relative to the NYC Mayoral race in just 10 hours. Here is the team that won second place. "Bodegas to Starbucks" speaks about how the coffee you drink in the morning can reflect larger trends in gentrification. They interview people on the street about how they feel about the changes in the business and how they effects rent. They speak about how gentrification can effect businesses, housing and people. Interviewees spoke about how they new mayor or city council can help the area and what they would like to see change. At night we had the SLAM! Each team premiered their video, showing only one minute or under for the first round. They judges saw each segment and numerically judged each work. The highest numbers went on to the second round where they would then show another segment. The first place won $400, second place $300, third place $200 to slip between each team. 

It was phenomenal to see what each team came up with in just 30 hours! To see so many people come together with so many different talents to be passionate about creating media was what shined at the event. Each team worked so hard and it was awesome to see what they came up with

We have been hard at work since mid afternoon to take all our recored material and create a focused story on the new mayoral campaign. This post production session is a collaboration between mentors and participants who are all bringing many skills from story telling and editing to each team. Both mentors and participants are working incredibly hard and are very dedicated to creating some really great stories. 

At 7 there will be a "Slam" event where the first part of their stories will be hear and the best will go on to the next level. Its going to be a great night!

We followed one team this morning out in the field while they did their interviewing. There were many teams that went all over the city. Some stayed near St. Josephs College @SJCNY, some went to WNYC Radio, and some went to Reel Works @Reelworks. Each team has spent time on creating a topic to report on, and now is the time to gather interviews through audio and visual media. 

First we have brainstorming in Saint Josephs College on how to ask the right type of questions. This teams focus is on how technology within NYC can affect youth employment. They will be asking questions on how the new mayor can affect employment among youths. 

This is one of the teams reporting from Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Public Library. We have mentor, Thelma, and participant, Samantha working together to interview and record audio. Some of the questions they were asking were:

Have they had a job interview? What was the process? What do they think can be improved to help young people get jobs? What one thing would you ask the new mayor improve employment for youths? And many more. 

This is only one teams of the day and there are about 10 teams out and about the city and there will be posts about their work as it comes in. The "slam" part of the night starts at 7 pm, where they will be playing clips of their work to get to the next level of the competition.

Here is Manoush Zomorodi  @manoushz started the keynote this morning. She is the host and managing editor of the New Tech City podcast, newtechcity. She talked about CAT-- Why we should care. Asking the right questions. Telling a story from beginning, middle, to end. 

She spoke about a few good questions to ask ourselves while reporting. What would I want to share from today? How would you like to change something within your topic? 

Most importantly, a sense of humor in politics can go a long way. 

Can't wait to see how the participants and mentors took the advice and what they come up with in just a few hours!

BREAKFAST! We all gathered back to Saint Josephs College this morning to get some food and get into groups to start the day. We began by playing a "Celebrity Head" game, where everyone has a celebrity taped on their back and has to ask questions to find out who they are. Everyone had a surprising amount of energy this morning and was ready to take on the full day ahead.

Live chatting the mayoral issues for the mentors and participants to focus on. The focus of the chats are 'civic engagement', 'juvenile justice', and 'teen health'.

Tomorrow they will  go out on the street and report on the issues they are talking about tonight. Each team is working with a mentor and they are focusing their reporting for tomorrow! For most of the day tomorrow they will be out on the streets in different parts of the city to ask people about their themes! They will then put together a report that will be played tomorrow night. They have 30 hrs from start to finish!
