Highland Croft

A traditional highland croft house and cart shed at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore.

Britain’s first open air museum is a great place to viisit, I caught the bus from Avimore and wandered around for two hours, not quite managing to cover the whole of it, my bis back to town was due, and the next one would have been two hours later. I will take another trip to finish the tour, hopefully on a day with better weather, I had planned to walk from Aviemore to Loch an Eilein but the rain came on heavier and decided to head to Inverness for a bit of live music.

Lochanhully House, Highland Folk Museum.

Lochanhully House was constructed in 1922 for Duncan Rose, a shoemaker, and his wife Isabella, by their sons Rhynie and Joe. It was constructed from timber sawn from 90 trees purchased from the Seafield Estate.

The house was originally located just outside Carrbridge, at Lochanhully. It was moved to the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore in 2013. The interior of the house has been interpreted to the 1950s and features furniture and artefacts from the first half of the 20th century such as a Berco boiler, a wireless, the original iron and brass bed frame (and chamber pot!), a children’s bedroom with traditional toys and games, and some typical 1950s dresses and outfits.
