Name: 2014 Kynsi Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard _________ My rating: 92 _________ My Price: $32 from @undergroundcellar, not available online, but previous best $48. _________ Had a few issues with @undergroundcellar inventory and shipping, so providing that caveat...but love some of their selections when they actually arrive. ______ I’ve had numerous Kynsi bottling before and while I like them all, this has been my favorite so far. Much heavier and thicker, as compared to previous bottles. Gorgeous nose of dark red cherries, sous bois, and floral notes. Name: 2011 McKinley Springs Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills _________ My rating: 88 _________ My Price: $20 from @garagiste (with shipping), best available online is around the same price without shipping. _________ Really pretty nose of mostly red fruit and some sous bois. On the palate, this is lighter than expected. Less black fruit and more red with this one. Some licorice, spice box, well integrated sweet oak and slight bitter chocolate on the finish are a welcome counterbalance, but still don’t offer a ton of complexity. This is a pleasant sipper and decent QPR from a tough vintage, but nothing profound. Name: 2014 JCB Passion _________ My rating: 92 _________ My Price: $35 from @winebid, best available now $40 online. _________ Belated NYE post...Even though the fam had been sick for what seems like months and we were not ambitious with our New Years plans, needed something decent to ring in 2020. Despite the somewhat obnoxious bottle, Jean-Charles Boisset “Passion” was really a nice and fitting NYE drink. A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot. Complex nose of black fruit, tobacco, petrol and eucalyptus. On the palate, this was really enjoyable. Bright ripe fruit, vanilla, tobacco, leather, cloves, and a good dose of “classy” oak, all meld together in a smooth and lush package, but with nice complexity and a long finish. Name: 2004 Snows Lake Vineyard Lake County Two _________ My rating: 94 _________ My Price: $10 from @winebid, best available now $36 online. _________ Another diamond in the rough from @winebid! Aged blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc from lake county. With 15 years of age I wasn’t sure what to expect for $10. Nose of dark sweet fruit and flowers with some alcohol which blows off. On the palate this is surprisingly elegant, and balanced at this stage. The texture of this is insanely silky and seamless. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon characteristics, but have to think the cab franc plays a nice supporting role adding to the spicy complexity. On the palate, this starts off funky, but in a good way I think. Mellow blackberries quickly move to tons of savory notes. New world nose of red fruit and a bit of smoke. On the palate, ripe and rich round cherry, notes of chocolate and espresso, combine with wet earth on a nice long finish. Tannins present but soft and surprisingly resolved. Everything in balance, but think this will only get better and more complex the next 2-4 years.
