heartbreaks & heartaches | austin & dakota & nick
There was a beep from his phone followed by the notification of Dakota’s text message telling him she was downstairs popping up on his creen. It didn’t take long before a smile graced his features and his mother’s voice pierced his ears. “Is that her?” came her faint voice followed by Austin’s nodding. Much like him, she’d been slowly getting her vigor back, getting out of bed a few times every day compared to the last few months of barely getting out at all. It helped that the news of Austin fixing things between him and Dakota seemed to brighten her spirits even more and in retrospect, made Austin lessen his dependence on her mysteriously missing medicine.
“Go ahead. I’ll still need to freshen up.” She insisted with a small smile as she got up and fixed his hair one last time. Nodding, he’d got up and went down the elevator to meet Dakota by the door, instead of just waiting in their living room like anyone would have expected. But this had been the first time in months since Austin actually felt his old self again, like there was a reason to put his trust back in the world and naive as it was, he wanted to relish in it again. Because this was Dakota. Save for that one miserable night, everything else had been nothing but great.
The doors to the ground floor opened with Dakota already waiting on the other side and all it took was him reaching for her hand and pulling her to his chest to feel whole again. “Not to scare you or anything – but Mom’s excited to see you again.” Grinning, he leaned to the side to press the elevators close, having been too distracted to have done it early enough to stop the next person from getting in before the doors closed behind them. He looked. Of course, it had to be him.
"Hey Nick."
