RIP testpilot Charles “Chuck” Yeager - 1923-2020... he’ll be missed! On October 14, 1947 testpilot Charles Yeager became the first human to break the sound barrier... He wore a Rolex Oyster wristwatch onboard the rocket-powered Bell X-1 which bore the name “Glamorous Glennis” as Yeager adored his wife! Ever since, Charles Yeager wore Rolex pilot watches, as in this August 1961 photo with female aviation pioneer Jacqueline Cochran, with a Rolex GMT-master 6542 on his wrist near a T-38 Talon at Edwards AFB. As a 2nd Lt student-pilot I read " The Right Stuff " and saw the movie several times... also devoured Yeager's autobiography and his Quest to Mach One book. A NF-104 test profile involved level acceleration at 35,000’ to M1.9 when rocket would be ignited, and at M2.1 pitched nose up to 50-70° at 3.5G burners throttled down at approx 70,000’ followed by manual fuel cutoff at 85K to prevent damaging engine temps

October 14, 1947 Charles Yeager broke the Sound Barrier flying the rocket-powered Bell X-1 “Glamorous Glennis” named after his beloved wife... in 1983 Yeager had a cameo role in the movie “ The Right Stuff “ as Fred the bartender in Pacho’s Palace pilot bar ! Although Charles Yeager retired in 1975, he often returned as a consulting testpilot for NASA and the US Air Force. Especially, on the anniversaries of his October 1947 flight past Mach 1.0 Charles Yeager was invited to recreate that historic event in a modern day jet fighter. Charles Yeager, the first pilot to fly faster than the speed of sound (supersonic), has always been a huge fan of Rolex wristwatches, which he has been wearing during a period of 75 years… the Rolex GMT-master Pepsi pilot watch being his favorite.
