And not long after I finished my first octopus artwork, I got started on the next!

Because of the intense detail on the last one, I wanted to start much looser and enjoy more of a rapid and unrestricted flow.  So I began by pulling gestural sketches from one of the videos I took in Fiji.  This is a technique I learned on a Natural History Illustration course last year and was one of my favourite lessons from the whole course.

The first few stages just required a standard graphite pencil (I use a mechanical one) and an eraser.  And for the final piece, I used the Pentel paint marker (silver) that I got in the December @scrawlrbox and some staples of my pencil case (Sakura Pigma Micron Pen 04 and Staedtler Fine Liner Pen 0.05).

Before I went away though I did manage to get a piece completed with my April @scrawlrbox goodies.

I’d recently watched Our Planet on @netflix and was literally heartbroken over the walrus scenes, so I created this piece and am working on some upcoming jewellery pieces to raise money for their conservation.

Here’s what I did with March’s @scrawlrbox supplies (and a couple of pens from an older box).

The rainbow palette of the Staedtler Super Soft pencils reminded me of the stunning colour changes of the Giant Cuttlefish in Australia during mating season, so I knew what I was gonna draw instantly.

Since completing a Natural History Illustration course, I always try to get into the swing of a piece by completing a ton of gestural sketches, really get to know the ins and outs of the anatomy of an animal first.  This is now one of my favourite stages <3

Second stage is finalising a pose and then completing it in fine liner pens, another stage that I adore ‘cos I LOVE the crisp lines you get with fine liners.  Also added a silver paint pen faux border too just ‘cos I think it’s a fun little touch and I got the pen in a previous Scrawlrbox.
