Sexism in Sports Video Games
Well hello there Tumblr, it has been far too long. My life has been very busy and hectic over the past few months, and my priorities have been elsewhere. However, this is the social media site with the biggest outlet for me, even though I don’t have too many followers, I feel this is still the best place for my voice and opinions to be heard.
So let’s hop right into it. I have a rant for you today. Over the past year I have developed a huge liking to hockey. It has always been the favorite sport of my family, and i’ve been watching it since I was young. Just recently though, i’ve really gotten into it. Sports was one thing I was never really in to. I know players and stats and teams and I don’t know how it happened, but I love it. It started when I bought NHL ‘15 for my dad. He is the big hockey fan of the house, and I got the game for him for fathers day. Turns out he didn’t like it as much as he liked NHL ‘94 on his Sega system, so I ended up keeping it. After watching the playoffs with my dad this past spring, I had a basic understanding of the actual game, and I caught on to the video game pretty quickly.
At first it was harmless, I played a game every few days against the computer. Before I knew it I was playing for hours a day online against other people. Online Versus Play was harmless, you don’t get the crazy die-hards there. No, they’re all in the other game modes. I took a particular liking to Hockey Ultimate Team. I love it. My team gets better everyday. It’s one thing I look forward too when I get home.
It took a little while before I ran into a guy with a mic. I don’t have a mic, simply because I have no desire for one. People don’t care though, and they can be relentless. Most guys barley speak, but out of every guy I’ve met that does like to talk on the mic, not one of them has been nice. I don’t care if you’re not nice, it’s one this to not like my play style or say that i’m a bad player, but we enter a whole ‘nother ballpark when you say things like “you’re just a stupid fucking dyke who has no idea what she’s doing and needs to go back in the kitchen”. Someone actually said that to me yesterday. (He was a fellow Isles fan too, I was very disappointed.)
Let me point out that nothing in my username indicates that I’m a lesbian. My username is JuliaMC27. Including my name in my gamer tag was a terrible decision, at least in this game. NHL ‘15 is the only game I really play right now, but by no means is it the only video game i’ve ever played. I’ve played dozens of other online games in the past, and in all those games combined I never experienced nearly as much hate and sexism as I do playing NHL ‘15. Just ten minutes ago I got paired with a guy and he said, “Leave, i’m not playing with a fucking girl” and would not quit the screen before me because it would penalize him.
Half the people I encounter like this assume i’m going to be awful, and the other half assume i’m a lesbian. (I am, but that’s besides the point.) I know that there is always trash talking in any video game, but not once has someone insulted me about something other than the fact that i’m a girl.
I could go on and on and on about this. I really, really enjoy this game, but some of the people I encounter really ruin it for me. I am not one to be easily offended, but some guys on HUT have genuinely made me upset. I just wish people would ignore my gamer tag and play a fucking game without wining and insulting me the whole time.
Sorry to rant and complain. All I know is that when I finally get around to getting a PS4 and NHL ‘16, I can guarantee you that my team name won’t have my name in it.
