The sound of nianfo and the many melodies, musical styles, cadences, and even languages of recitation is so beautiful. I love how the different cultures that have been touched by the Dharma adapt this already beautiful sound to each of their individual aesthetic sensibilities. It's a powerful reminder of the power of Dharma to connect us practitioners across cultures and of the enormous debt of gratitude owed to the Asian cultures that have preserved the tradition.

Namo Amitabha Buddha

In most Pure Land traditions, mindfully chanting of the name of Amitābha is viewed as allowing one to obtain birth in Amitābha's pure land, Sukhāvatī. It is felt that this act would help to negate vast stores of negative karma that might hinder one's pursuit of buddhahood. Sukhāvatī is a place of refuge where one can become enlightened without being distracted by the sufferings of our existence.

My Shot at a Pure Land 'Koan.'

Once two monks were talking, and one said: 'There is a village in the mountains where there are no sacred texts, no temples and no great masters. Yet Amida's light shines more brightly there than in ten universes.'

'Where is this place?' asked his companion. 'I must see it for myself.'

So his friend gave him directions and the monk hurried off. He returned after several days, weary and angry.

'You misled me!' he accused his companion. 'What kind of trick were you trying to play? I saw nothing of Amida's light there.'

'What did you see?' asked the friend

The other monk snorted. 'Just a derelict town of hungry beggars. And an old woman serving soup.'
