So, I wrote a whole book. I was proud of myself because I haven't finished anything in ever, haha. But when I go back to reread what I've written I realize that it is absolute garbage! I still really like my characters, but I don't like my story anymore. What can I do?

Hey Nonnie, sorry I have taken 15 days to answer - I have been really busy lately.

I AM SO SUPER PROUD OF YOU!! Good job on finishing a book!! You’ve now finished your first draft!! :D It’s completely normal not to like your own work, especially in the early stages! Yes- I know it feels like you’ve finished but you are really still in the early stages! I’m sure it’s not as terrible as you think. :)

So what can you do? Edit! It’s time for draft two. Although when did you finish writing it? You might want to give yourself a breather from it for a while and try to distance yourself so you can reread later with as fresh eyes as you can.

When you do reread, every time you find something in your story that you don’t like, make a note and rewrite it. Find a way that it could be different, and try that instead. Play around with everything. It’s okay to rework as much or as little as you like in your drafts.

Also now is a good time to have someone read over it and give any feedback. Maybe look for an editor? Think about what your long term goals for your book is? Do you want to start the process of getting published? Do you want to start another book instead? The next step is do whatever the hell you want. You got this under control :D Just don’t give up!
