Gossip Girl, Ep.2x01 – Deb Bawl in a New Dress (Spoilers)

I wasn’t sure I was going to come back for the second season.  My enjoyment of the first season became less and less as the season wore on. But I have to admit that I really did enjoy this episode.  I think it’s because it’s more….they still have poignant moments and there’s still a message here; but they’re also leaning into their trashy drama roots more.  And I mean that in a good way.

Of course, it may also be because Shan has become a regular.  Shan, by far, is my favorite character.  She’s smart, confident, stands up to the system in her own way.  And, quite frankly, knows that her High School is just one giant shitshow; so she might as well sit back with her popcorn and have fun with it.

I also enjoyed that we didn’t have this idea of any of the adults having a higher ground here.  Kate is lying to Nick in order to get into the Debutant Ball.  Nick is lying to the two girls so they don’t know where the money came from and lying to Kate about telling them the truth.  The New Teacher seems to have his own secrets as well.  Like, really, you’re all a mess.  

But what I found the most interesting about this episode is how I felt for all of the characters at one time or another.  For instance, I felt sorry for Max because, considering how he was treated last season, it is understandable that he wanted some sort of statement or proof that Audrey and Aki really wanted this relationship.  At the same time, I liked the fact that Luna pointed out that, while she and Max may have an idea of who they are now; they still had to go through the process of figuring things out.  And that’s where Audrey and Aki are.  They love Max, but they’re not quite to the point they’re ready to come out.  And it showed growth on Max’s part too, not just because he vulnerable enough to explain why he was pushing for their relationship to be out in the open; but also acknowledge that he didn’t take the time to consider why they may not be ready.

And then there’s Zoya, Julian, and Nick.  On the one hand, it did feel like Zoya was being a little bit of the bratty younger sister as she failed to understand just how much of an adjustment this was for Julian and that Nick was just trying to make her feel at home.  That being said, I don’t blame Zoya for feeling replaced considering Nick had no problems canceling his plans with Zoya to help Julian and just assuming Zoya would be fine with this.  It’s a big change in her life too and by just changing his plans without asking…not ok.  And probably will make things harder in the long run.

I loved the fact that Monet’s plan to teach Julian a lesson by inviting her sex offender dad to embarrass her and then to seem progressive by having a female escort and flaunting the dress code was derailed by Zoya’s plan to teach Julian a lesson by sneaking the girlfriend of one of the debutants in so that the girlfriend could escort the woman she loves.  Hell, it’s almost a prefect example of activism vs. performative activism.

But let’s talk about that moment between Monet and her mother.  My God, talk about missing the forest for the trees.  Now, the Mother was right about one thing; there was no excuse for what Monet did that night to Julian.  If I had a child, I probably would have been ashamed of them too in that moment.  That being said, ma’am the reason why your daughter is acting this way, is because of you. She’s watched the way you treat people, which seems to include Monet herself, and you wonder why she acts this way?  Granted, her way was more petty and juvenile then what the mother would have done; but it comes from the same place.  The lack of empathy for others.  The belief that others are there to serve you. You can’t expect your child not to be cruel, if you don’t show her what kindness is.   I’ll be honest, if Kate spends the rest of the season really trying to take down Monet’s mother…I can live with that.
