My Week(s) in Reviews: December 14, 2025
I haven't quite forgotten about this blog, quite yet... I just haven't really been seeing any new movies. Flu and the like, along with a dense cinder block of a never-ending book, have really made me fall behind. I'm planning on going hard on my backlog of movies and shows in these last couple weeks of the year, but until then I at least have four for y'all. Let's go...
Bugonia (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2025)
Weird? Obviously. Heavy-handed? Definitely. Brilliantly acted? Hell yes. The three leads are fantastic. Jesse Plemons is especially impressive, delivering a career best performance (or second place to Game Night?) as an unpredictable, terrifyingly disturbed alien hunter. Newcomer Aidan Delbis wows, bringing a heartbreaking trust and devotion to his character that helps make some of the more disturbing events and ideas throughout hit home like a wrecking ball. Then there's the always phenomenal Emma Stone, who can pretty much do no wrong in my book, and wholly commits here in a way that's as unreadable as it is utterly enthralling. Her work with Lanthimos is always fearless and fascinating, and the collaborative trust on display here makes the movie. The dynamic built between the three as the psychological and narrative stakes rise is gripping in its understanding of its political and philosophical themes and the high-concept execution of its oddball premise. And the way the final act falls apart is batshit crazy in the exact way I was hoping it would be. - 8.5/10
Sorcerer (William Friedkin, 1977)
I could've sworn I'd seen this, but I guess I only ever saw pieces. Anyway, it's not nearly as good as Wages of Fear. But, the visuals and tension built throughout make for an effectively taut viewing experience, and the cast help move the narrative forward in a way that's as mindful as it is thrilling. - 7/10
The Naked Gun (Akiva Schaffer, 2025)
The first act has plenty of laughs, but the rest feels too forced, and Neeson and company seem too in on the joke. The best part of the originals was just how straight Nielsen and company played EVERYTHING. The delivery here just doesn't match that brilliant energy. - 5/10
She Rides Shotgun (Nick Rowland, 2025)
Well crafted and acted, but the final act sadly goes in a direction that doesn't seem natural to the story, and makes the film as a whole fall a little short. - 6/10

Film: SHE RIDES SHOTGUN (dir. Nick Rowland, 2025, USA)
Forum: Marcus Point Cinema, Madison, WI Format: DCP
Observations: Here's another movie making the briefest appearance in theaters on its way to Amazon Prime. This one - perhaps meant to boost Taron Egerton's star profile (he's an executive producer), maybe some weird passion project - resembles the kind of low-key actioners that USA filmmakers cranked out a half-century ago. It's a point-A-to-point-B drama of anti-hero Egerton (and juvenile co-star Ana Sophia Heger) on the run from his former associates in the drug trade, hurdling across the nighttime landscape of New Mexico. Had this film been made in Argentina, France, or Australia, it might have enjoyed some festival attention. Instead, it's destined only to be streaming fodder. A few other folks at the show for this one.
THE SHADOW OF VIOLENCE (2020) Grade: B-
Interesting, dark, tough with really good direction. The ending was a little predictable but the rising action was entertaining

I'm very fond of small Irish dramas, especially when they feature the excellent Barry Keoghan. This is mostly about growing up without options and being forced into situations that will inevitably forever change the course of your life and the ones around you. The sort of stuff that makes you wish for a happy ending, but that rarely happens.
