Is Nick too important in the TV Show ?

Some people regret that Nick plays a significant role in June’s journey towards rebellion. They also oppose the relationship she had with Luke with the one she has with him. 

I don’t. 

I don’t think that it’s the purpose of this character and this relationship. June is not choosing between two men. She is not seeking for a new relationship. She tries to regain control over her body and life, and Nick helps her in many ways. 

First, he is there when she wants to feel pleasure again. And his gestures when they are alone immediatly display respect (his kisses, caresses, ...). They are totally opposed to Fred’s. Moreover, in this relationship, June is not controlled by Nick. Don’t forget that she decides to go to him, in a first place. 

Second, this relationship is a reminder that women and men should not be ennemies. In Gilead, women need to fight those who want to control them : men or women. The show does not provide a ridiculous vision of feminism, but something more realistic. 

Third, it is irrelevant to question if they will have an happy ending. It may be impossible in this world. But at least, this relationship is a good reminder that you can find hope and human warmth everywhere.
