stranger, when you look at me eyes strong as steel, light as day born a mystery, you're the in-between boy or girl - stranger by goldfrapp
stranger...when you look at me...
For a man with an intense sense of smell that would drive normal human to madness, hers wafts toward him like a caress, like tender fingers moving along the curve of his cheek. The moment it hits him, he can no longer smell anything else, like the people walk by with either unique scents, some sweet, some sour, and some utterly repugnant. Lost is the chorus of spices hovering over the various street food stalls sitting one next to another, cashier hawking their tasty creations to the folks passing by with grumbly stomachs. The faint stench of tar from the heated pavement, the murmurs of various conversations swirling around him, the passionate crooning of an old man who had a story to tell about love...all drowned out by the faint scent of spice and melancholy and the shimmer of a pair of eyes, red like rubies, gazing at him just as intensely.
eyes strong as steel...light as day
It's only when the beast within begins to whine does Caleb realize that the eyes belong to a *woman*. The other faces in the crowd blur, and for a stopped moment in time, he can see only *her*. Save for her eyes, she seemed like a normal person - except for her extraordinary beauty. She looked like she stepped out of a dream, no, a fairytale, a vision of otherworldly radiance that painted her as either the heroine or the villainess.
She is not a normal person. The beast within senses it. There is something about her...something not human...and in a world where he struggled to keep at bay a beast with the power to destroy anything in its path, Caleb found himself gazing at the one person in the world who could absolutely destroy him.
And yet, as she disappears into the crowd once more, he knew that she would invade every corner of his mind, haunting him every hour of every day.
born a mystery...you're the in-between
His beast would while and growl, longing for a glimpse of the woman with gleaming rubies for eyes. On the outside, people wouldn't notice the change. They'd just see him as the celebrated pilot, damn good at his job, affable, with a personality like the sun. But behind closed doors, he was tortured. His beast grew more agitated, demanding to be let out of its cage in order to find the woman that could kill it where it stood. Every waking moment was spent keeping himself in check. Keeping the beast within was already difficult enough. But resisting the urges of a beast maddened with desire...that was an entirely different struggle he wished on no one.
Thinking of her hurts.
Not being able to find her is painful.
The things he would do if he could catch a glimpse of her again.
But all he can do is soldier on, pretending that nothing has changed, that he is still everyone's favorite pilot, even though he suffers being without her.
boy or girl
The Full Moon is high in the sky. Caleb takes care to sneak out of his apartment wearing a hoodie and a backpack, making sure no one sees him leaving at dead of night. The backpack has an extra pair of clothes - once he reaches the heart of the forest, it's not long before the ones he's wearing are ripped into shreds as the werewolf bursts forth. The werewolf within is finally free, arching its back as it howls to the silvery moon.
He's in full sprint when that familiar scent wafts into his nostrils once more. Even as a feral beast, he's caught off-guard. He stumbles over his feet, hitting the ground with a loud thud.
"Did I startle you? I'm sorry...I didn't meant to." The voice, quiet and musical, comes from above. He looks up to see her sitting high up in a nearby tree, looking down at him with an amused expression. His humanity returns somewhat as he takes in the sight up, still as beautiful and as dangerous as she was the day he saw her floating in the crowd. "To be honest...I was hoping that I would see you again. And now, here you are."
Werewolf Caleb watches as she hops down from the tree as though she were sitting up from an office chair. He growls at her in warning but she doesn't seem to be afraid. On the contrary, her smile widens as she stands before him, ruby eyes wide with awe. "How lucky you are to be so handsome, as a human, and as a beast. Will you let me run with you for a while?"
He knew then that no matter what, he would never be able to refuse her.
