Happy first birthday, Violet June!

My niece is 1 year old today! She is so strong, beautiful, sweet, and smart. I can’t wait to watch her grow up!

Thoughts on Running

Sorry I haven’t kept up on my personal challenge but my niece finally arrived. I was thinking since I owe four days of 550 words I would jot down my thoughts on a personal subject that I can say a lot about. I saw a post like two weeks ago about a Maze Runner challenge and it got me thinking about running in general.

In my mind I always thought there were two kinds of runners, the ones who run with their head and the ones who run with their heart. The first kind is runners who can control their pace and run with a machine-like precision. Every mile has the same pace with little to no variance and their thoughts are concentrated on the task at hand. If they have a seed of talent they are extremely hard to beat because they move with consistence. The second kind of runner is a wild card, they run off emotions. Depending on the emotion this can be dangerous. To run with anger fueling them they will continue to run even when they should stop and often they will injure themselves.  The flip side is, of course, they can run with greater strength when they are happy. They have trouble staying focused when they train and during a race they will speed up or slow down depending on the course and how it effects their emotions.

I have heard people say that the length of the runner’s leg are what determine if the runner is fast or not and this is a stupid observation! If a runner has long legs it is true their stride is longer and covers more ground but the cycle of how long it takes them to rotate their leg is longer. They do use less energy in the sense that they take fewer strides compared to a short person but it takes more energy to move their long limbs. A shorter person can move faster but it requires more energy because they have to move more to cover the same distance.  I know this is true because I used to be 5’4 and now am around 6’. When I was shorter my running style was to take small but quick steps and when I received my last growth spurt I was forced to change my style or I would have been forever eating to keep expending energy in the same manner.

Speaking of eating, I fully recommend giving up eating three square meals a day and switching to five. Much like a hobbit a runner should eat three times a day with a medium size meal each time. Also it should be noted that a runner to stay hydrated has to adjust to using the bathroom every hour to two. I think the diet is what bothers me most but there are benefits to running (besides the obvious like a fit body).

The best thing about running is a runner’s high. I can’t say it is like a normal high as I refuse to consider drugs but I can describe the runner’s high. Imagine, you’re running and you have sweat cover you and you’re tired. Your muscles feel a little tight and your feet are starting to feel warmer than you’d like. Just as you feel like quitting you feel a tingling sensation start in your lower back and move up. A rush a calmness and strength spread across your shoulders and down your arms as you pump them back and forth. Your legs receive the feeling last and you find all those small inconveniences have gone. As you run a little faster to test this strange feeling you get a little headed. A strange pulse and rhythm fill you, compelling you to run faster. Happiness and pure joy as you find yourself capable to move in a way that didn’t seem possible mere seconds ago.   

Ahh my brother (who is reading over my shoulder) would like me to remind everyone that despite what you think everyone can run. I am reminded that when I tell people that I’m a runner I often hear “wow, I could never do that.” It’s not true! Anyone can run, all you have to do is keep moving forward. Keep putting one foot in front of the other and pump your arms. No one is saying you have to run as fast as Usain Bolt or even that you have to run a marathon on your first try. All it takes is the mind power and determination to keep pushing yourself and you are a runner. This may seem like easy advice from someone who already runs but it remains true nevertheless. No one, even those who have a gift, is in shape right off the bat and no one can understand the etiquette that runners generally have. We are like a chess club; we don’t care how good you are to start as long as you put forth effort and enjoy the spirit of the activity.  Running may seem like a hard sport but its simplicity means that everyone can do it and on the flip side is just when you start thinking it’s an easy sport you will discover you can always push your body and mind to the next level if you are willing to endure the physical challenge. The nice thing though is that it all depends on your comfort level because you decide how fast you go and when you run. The sport is about getting to know yourself in that way.

SURPRISE!

other brother showed up for a quick visit!! me and big brother were watching tv at home when we heard the front door open then we saw michael as his six foot, 300 lb frame filled the den doorway and i yelled "OTHER BROTHER!" he didn't like that oh well. also, we found out that big brother is having a baby girl in august! the three of us spent some time talking about how cool it is that we're growing up and welcoming the next generation to the world. :) i am so fucking blessed. -Stoney

Yeah so I love my best friend.

I took him home today after school and we sat in the school parking lot and put "Donk" on and were dancing in my car like total retards.

I think Allison Hardee and Taylor Johnson almost peed themselves. Haha

Yeah, we're just cool like that.

And then I got a kiss on the cheek when I dropped him off! D'aw.

And today during Spanish class I was talking to my friend Sarah and I said "Yeah I've dated Parker Vegas and Dennis"

And this guy that sits in front of me that I don't really know goes "Damn. You need to date a real man!"

Even people I don't know, know I have a terrible track record. Haha.

Oh well.

It's the weekend and I get to see Abby tomorrow! I miss my baby girl :(
