I Didn’t Mean To || Open
Burning flesh was all that Kenna could smell, her mouth hung open in an attempted sob that never quite made its way out. They’d told her that they would take her back, after running for three years, but she didn’t believe them. They had to have been lying - to lull her into a false sense of security. It wasn’t true. They were cruel liars. But now they were dead, burnt to ash and bone in front of her, what was left of them smoldering as she knelt on the ground, staring on in horror. It was exactly like her fathers death. Kenna was a murderer. After three years, that was all she would ever be. A murderer.
Daddy’s Little Girl || Open
Something inside of Allison snapped when the doctor gave her that sympathetic, steady stare. His words blurred into one another, and Allison only shook her head in response, “No... no!” She gasped out, “You’re lying!” She had to make a conscious effort not to shove the doctor, backing away from him as though he’d burned her. “He’s not dead. He can’t be dead.” Not her dad. Not him. Anyone but him. He never would have committed suicide. Never. “No.” Allison choked out. How could she have missed the signs?
“Leave me alone.”
Can You Fix the Broken? || Open
Fall leaves and twigs crunched underfoot, creating a cacophony of sound that mingled with the symphony of panicked sounds that escaped Laura. The creak of tree branches under the weight of the snow was an eerie soundtrack to a chase that took place through months and years, a never-ending pursuit that Laura could not escape from. Her pursuers had all the time in the world, decades and centuries and even more time after that. They could be as patient as they needed, or as impatient as was called for. One trip would send Laura clambering to the ground, where she’d be at the complete mercy of the heartless purgatory demons. They wished no good upon the world, only an onslaught of pain and torture that seized all light from the world. One second, Laura was running alongside a lake’s edge, the next, her attacker was in front of her. Laura’s eyes shifted blue, her features blending into the wolf she really was. A rabid growl snarled through her while her claws ripped through her attacker, shoving the beast to the ground before a clawed hand tore the beating heart from his chest.
With a noise behind her, Laura dropped the still-beating heart into the grass and whirled on the next foe. Shedding her human skin in favour of the beautiful wolf form that was infinitely stronger, Laura tore into the menaces, one by one ripping out throats, hearts, and stomachs. Leaving a trail of carnage and accumulating a glistening second-coat of red, Laura defeated her demons, only to turn back to survey her work with pride and a wolfish snarl.
The sight that beheld her was not the one she expected. Nearest to her lay Cora, throat torn clean away as she died, blood trickling down her cheeks from her pale lips. The wolf approached with shaking limbs, staring at her sister in horror. They’d been demons – mere demons, this couldn’t be real. Was this another hallucination? A twisted purgatory vision?
“You-“ Cora choked out, unable to finish her words. Laura whimpered, nudging her sister with her nose, only to find that no pulse livened Cora any longer.
She moved on, growing more and more defeated as she realized that she’d killed her friends, family – the people she loved so dearly. They glared accusatorily at her in the seconds before their eyes rolled back in their heads, some gritting out her name angrily. The wolf’s ears flattened to her head, tail hiding between her legs as she walked back through her path of carnage, reaching the first person she’d killed. Derek stared lifelessly up at her, heart having fallen silent in the damp grass beside his body.
Laura would have collapsed and sobbed if she could have brought herself to do just that, but instead she howled sorrowfully. A branch creaked behind her in someone’s approach, and the wolf whirled around on edge, growling already. She half expected it to be the elder god, laughing in triumph at finally succeeding in making her destroy everything she loved.
I’m Worried What the Future Holds || Open
Lena wasn’t sure when she’d come to the hospital, but she’d been there in a daze for long enough that she didn’t care anymore. People were whispering as she passed, and somehow she knew they were all talking about her. The poor girl with the dying brother, who would never know again what it was like to have a whole family. The poor girl who wouldn’t get to have all the experiences she should have with her two big brothers, because soon there would only be one.
Her feet carried her to the hospital room without her eyes guiding the way, it had been imprinted into her very being. She knew exactly how many steps it was from the vending machine, with the dollar-fifty sour candies, to the door of her brother’s hospital room. Twenty five steps. Lena counted them, hand wrapping around the door knob on the twenty-fifth step. Inside the room, Lena didn’t look at her brother. It was hard to look at someone that you knew was dying, despite the strange beauty there was to their death. She could hear the steady rhythm of the heart monitor that Charlie was hooked up to. It was a comfort, knowing that his heart continued to a regular beat, despite the complete certainty that he would die.
Say your prayers, little one Don't forget, my son To include everyone Tuck you in, warm within Keep you free from sin Till the Sandman he comes Sleep with one eye open Gripping your pillow tight Exit: light Enter: night Take my hand We're off to never never land Something's wrong, shut the light Heavy thoughts tonight And they aren't of Snow White Dreams of war, dreams of liars Dreams of dragon's fire And of things that will bite Sleep with one eye open Gripping your pillow tight Exit: light Enter: night Take my hand We're off to never never land Now I lay me down to sleep Pray the Lord my soul to keep If I die before I wake Pray the Lord my soul to take Hush little baby, don't say a word And never mind that noise you heard It's just the beasts under your bed In your closet, in your head Exit: light Enter: night Grain of sand Exit: light Enter: night Take my hand We're off to never never land
How can I pretend that I don't see What you hide so carelessly I saw her bleed You heard me breathe And I froze inside myself and turned away I must be dreaming We all live We all die That does not begin to justify you It's not what it seems Not what you tihnk No I must be dreaming It's only in my mind Not real life No I must be dreaming Help you know I've got to tell someone Tell them what I know you've done I fear you But spoken fears can come true We all live We all die That does not begin to justify you It's not what it seems Not what you tihnk No I must be dreaming It's only in my mind Not real life No I must be dreaming Not what it seems Not you think I must be dreaming Just in my mind Not real life I must be dreaming
