Sometimes, you couldn’t go wrong with the classics. At a charity ball, raising money for a good cause, sometimes that meant shaking hands and playing nice with those you normally would rather avoid. Right now J’onn was making a public appearance to champion for LGBT+ youth, a cause that was among others near and dear to his heart. So it seemed appropriate to be wearing one of his nicer dresses, something dark, nearly midnight blue with a slit almost dangerously high up his leg.

He was feeling rather bored, though, even with all of the attention on him. It happened; after all, being tall and green was bound to attract attention, even if he wasn’t an active member of the public. He had a drink in hand, mostly for decoration as earth alcohol did nothing for him, and was politely chatting up a few members of the ball and desperately hoping for an excuse to exit the little group surrounding him and have some space.

“I have some good news and some bad news.”  He’s limping out of the flames, dragging two bodies behind him.  They’re alive, yes, and he didn’t cause the fire, but this chase was much longer than it had any right to be, in all honesty, and Damian knows that.  “The good news is that the criminals have been apprehended, their stolen getaway car has been disabled, and there weren’t any innocents hurt.”  He staggers for a moment, before straightening up and facing his father.  “The bad news is that I think I broke my right ulna, I know for a fact that the car broke my left ankle, and we still don’t know who the owner of the car is.”  Two of those were just fancy ways of saying that Damian got hit by the car in some fashion or another.  How is he staying so calm?  Half shock, and half reminding himself that he’s had worse.

      “Alright, my man. I know you’ve got expensive scotch and Cuban cigars and…whatever else you rich assholes celebrate with but you’re coming with me for a beer downtown. Immerse yourself amongst the people and all that. Besides, the newspapers will love it. Bruce Wayne at a dive bar, story at eleven!” Arthur insisted, clapping a hand on Bruce’s shoulder, squeezing it emphatically. “We kicked ass today and Big Blue has a date so it’s just me and you, I guess! Come on, maybe they’ll have wings, too. I love me some buffalo wings,” he said thoughtfully, absently rubbing his stomach. He steered Bruce towards the manor’s front door. “Come on, we can even take your fancy car,” Arthur grinned. / @nighttknight​

     “This the part where I tell you y’wrong?” John drawled. “Cos it jus’ ain’t that simple. It’s a bit o’ a catch-22, innit?”

For most of his young life he had spent going from one family to another, never predicting when he would move once again. The moving began to take its toll on the child, one that gave him doubts of ever finding that ‘one true place’ he could really grow in. Nikolai remembered his parents well, even their names and the kindly features of his mothers face. The letter that notified him of their demise is the real breaker, a parchment he has since kept with him always. Happiness came shortly after, although brief, a French Senator had taken the boy in and awkwardly did the best he could to raise the kid for a couple of years. Then…sickness took the man and left the boy alone once again.

Two more families came with the same results, Nikolai was left alone. 

Nikolai was never really as stupid as one might think with his innocence. At a mere eight years old he had the world figured out in a simple statement. Life sucks, and then you die.

The boy is struggling with a task at the moment. His skinny, dirty appearance makes him an unmistakable part of the lower class. His clothes are frayed at the edges, even dappled in dried stains from whatever he ended up falling into. His wee feet are on an unstable trash can while the middle part of his body is bent over the edge of a large dumpster. He has his eye on a half eaten sandwich in with all the garbage. Nikolai’s arm isn’t really getting him any closer to his prize. He paws at the air, as if wishing the sandwich to come to him somehow.  

Well, he can’t get it. Frustration over this, as well as hunger, causes a misty look to his eyes to form as he sniffled. He straightened himself a little too quickly, causing the trash can to topple and his fingers to hook on the edge of the dumpster instinctively. From there, he lets himself drop the short foot onto the asphalt below.

How frustrating, but it was worth a shot.

          The bat and the canary had always been a long shared friendship, based on mutual respect on both professional and personal side. When Dinah was in trouble, Bruce would always show up no matter what, and when he was the one struggling, she’d appear in a flash of light to save his ass - though he’d pretend he was handling it. But a little help never killed anyone, right ? He was also one of them to vote for Dinah as mother hen of the Young Justice, first because of her maternal instinct, and second, because she was the best at balancing her emotions with business. That exact reason why she had been promoted to chairwoman as well. However, she hadn’t expected Bruce to take a seat at an odd hour to open up about one of his darkest memories, regrets and secrets. 

Dinah watched him with attention, gloved hands resting on both sides of the armchair. She wouldn’t say anything before he was completely done talking. Canary wasn’t a professional psychologist,  she wouldn’t be able to fix him, but she was a good listener, and what he needed right now was a friend. 

The question of sidekicks had always been overly complicated to understand and accept. Herself never had taken any, even when Steph had come to her several times, she had pushed her away. It was both hypocrite and protective. The answer couldn’t be all white or black, but when you listened to Bruce’s speech, you would probably side on the canary’s opinion on the matter.      “ You don’t pay me, I’m just being a friend here, okay ? And don’t tell me you’re not ‘cause you’re going to hurt me strong. ”     she drew a smile over her lips, then tilted her head more seriously,      “ I know you’re taking the blame on Jason, and with if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, but this is not your fault. I’m not saying the guilt will never go away, that’s something you’ll have to deal with for a long time. But Bruce... you did the right thing by not killing him. This is so easy to release our first instincts, to surrender to our revenges, but that would only add another guilt to your troubled nights. Trust me, I’m close of Barbara, and I want him dead, he would be the only exception, but... that’s not what we do, right ? ”
