Not a theory, but more like a fun AU thing: Nika and Luffy are two halves of the same soul. Nika is older than the void century, and Imu probably is too, so what if when when the two of them fought (because after all we've learned in recent chapters, I refuse to believe they didn't fight) , Imu split Nika's soul in half? One half went into Luffy's devil fruit and the other reincarnated into Luffy. But the thing is, souls heal overtime, and chaos theory exists. Chaos theory is a math and physics process but it can absolutely be applied to other things as well: Chaos theory states that within the apparent randomness of chaotic complex systems, there are underlying patterns, interconnection, constant feedback loops, repetition, self-similarity, fractals, and self-organization. but in practice the theory shows that the slightest deviation of a point changes it dramatically. You can apply this to real world instances, but when applying it to people, or in this case, Nika and Luffy, the changes in what they go through being trapped in the devil fruit vs reincarnated and waiting to become a god again, has healed their halves of the soul in different ways, and created two different people who were once the same person. Two consciousnesses that began as one. That's why the devil fruit called to Luffy so strongly. He may have eaten it out of anger in canon, but the chest had his attention the second it was close because the literal other half of his soul was inside, and eating it made him whole again---Kind of. Because the two half have healed back into separate wholes over the 800+ years, they no longer fit together, creating a dissonance that won't allow them to become the same person again, and leaving them as separate consciousnesses in Luffy's head. Nika can make himself a separate body now that he's free from the devil fruit, but splitting from Luffy doesn't feel right to do most of the time. It's like splitting the soul in half again. It's bearable but not ideal, especially if they're not close together.

They're two halves of a whole that have been repaired in full and no longer fit together, but who will forever match. Or in short: fucked up soulmates.
