Terrific 22 Girls Rankings (October 3rd)

Big meets over the past two weeks have helped us separate the contenders from the rest of the field.  Griak gave us a rare chance to see three of the top five teams in the country square off while several other meets included top national/regional competition to compare squads.  California has more or less locked in a third team by now after some great performances against out of state competition.  New York and the Midwest still may have the guns to get a third team, and the Northwest is holding onto a third spot after a strong showing against now ranked Claremont.

Rank-Team-Region-Surety Rating-Notes

1) Fayetteville Manlius (NY) 8.5- Hasn't race since Wayne Invite but the king always gets the benefit of the doubt, even with a couple races that seem off. FM knows September isn’t championship season. 

2) Buchanan (CA) 8- Narrowly wins Doug Rudolf Invite on 9/22 over Clovis by 2, but without 3 of top 7.

3) Great Oak (CA) 8- Traveled to Griak and lost to Naperville North by 2 points. #3 returner Devin Ito is returning to the race lineup soon.

4) Naperville North (MW) 8- Took down GO by 2 points at Griak and looks to be a serious contender this year. Question is can they recreate that after a long travel trip of their own to Portland?

5) Wayzata (H) 8.5- Third at Griak by less than 25 points. Also won Willmar this past weekend with 27 points.

6) Keller (S) 8.5- Wins Chili Pepper with 50 points in a field of 70 teams. 18:18 5k average.

7) Mountain Vista (SW) 8- Won Pat Patten Invite with 34 points over Battle Mountain/Broomfield with 65 points

8) Jesuit (NW) 8- Wins Nike Twilight with 44 points with 18:17 average and Makenna Schumacher back.

9) Centerville (MW) 7.5- Wins Paul Short with 18:45 average and 61 points in a deep field.

10) Claremont (CA) 7.5- Won Bob Firman over Bozeman and Mountain View 137-140-186 which will be a good resume builder for an at large spot should those teams qualify.

11) Bozeman (NW) 7- Second at Bob Firman to Claremont by 3 points.

12) Chandler (SW) 7- Wins Sweepstakes race at Desert Twilight by a good margin with an 18:31 average.

13) Southlake Carroll (S) 7- Won Falcon Fast Invite with 18:52 average. Marcus and Flower Mound had good races at Nike South and could be closing the gap.

14) Saratoga (NY) 7- Won Ocean State Invite on 9/23 with a 19:19 average. A couple top returners haven't raced yet, but if Saratoga doesn't find a solid 5th, Shen could easily slip ahead of them.

15) Broomfield (SW) 6.5- Lost on a tie to Battle Mountain at Pat Patten Invite without their #2.

16) Shenendehowa (NY) 6.5- Won McQuaid Invite over Liverpool 44-58 with an 18:00 average.

17) Mountain View (NW) 7- Beat previously ranked Sunset by 12 points, led by Lexy Halladay, with a 18:30 average

18) Weddington (SE) 7- Only won County by 2 points with the same squad that won Adidas.

19) Edina (H) 6- 8th at Griak without their #2 and #3. Will have to wait to see if they return to racing soon.

20) Blacksburg (SE) 6.5- Won Cougar Clash Invite with 29 points. Averaged 20:21 but missing several top girls.

21) Tewksbury (NE) 7.5- Second to Saratoga at Ocean State by 12 points. Averaged 19:41

22) Champlain Valley (NE) 6- Won Manchester Invite. The second spot for Northeast is looking very open and several NJ/PA teams could swoop in and take this spot.

Terrific 22 Girls Rankings (September 19th)

The fireworks have started.  We’ve seen the best in action and we’ve seen some great performances and now we have a much more firm idea of who belongs where.  Because we’re still waiting to see how a few of these team compete against upper level competition, there is a good chance that the NY and NW regions won’t be predicted to have an at large bid next ranking and the MW and maybe even CA pick up another one.

Rank-Team-Region-Surety Rating

1) Fayetteville Manlius (NY) 8 - FM pulls out the win at the Wayne Pre-State invite although their spread was almost 1:45.  Closing that for later in the year will be important but FM has shown in the past they are willing to look beatable during the regular season and be ready to go for the big ones.

2) Buchanan (CA) 8 - We weren’t sure if they were a top 3 team last T22, but they are.  Beating Great Oak is something few teams will do this year and Buchanan did it in their opener.  Buchanan averaged a blazing 16:43 and had a 92 second spread.  They’re really helping themselves with, instead of having one low stick, having two in Corie Smith and Meagan Lowe who both broke 16.

3) Great Oak (CA) 8 - Falling to Buchanan at Woodbridge by 24 points only drops them one spot. While GO had a wider spread than Buchanan as well, the nature of the state meet (the NXN qualifier) will most likely be less of a time trial like Woodbridge and the spread may be less of a factor.  Great Oak also is definitively planning for NXN so it wouldn’t be surprising to see these rankings flip flop again later in the season.

4) Keller (S) 8.5 - Keller scored 17 points at Prowl in the Park against local competition. They average 18:12 with a spread of less than a minute.

5) Mountain Vista (SW) 8 - MV continues to roll, beating Broomfield soundly at the Liberty Bell invite last week. Also their early season wins against Palmer Ridge and Peak to Peak look even better after they both finished high at Woodbridge.

6) Wayzata (H) 8.5 - Won the Metro Invitational against local competition with a score of 17 points and a spread of 46 seconds, though the team only averaged 18:49.

7) Naperville North (MW) 8 - Takes down Yorkville in the First to the finish meet by 26 points last week and averages under 17:50 at Detweiler.

8) Jesuit (NW) 8 - Won a local tri meet with 15 points and a 48 second spread with Schumacher back in the line up.

9) Centerville (MW) 7.5 - Dropping a bit after narrowly beating Carmel by 4 points, the midwest looks to have several teams that could all be within striking distance of each other in terms of who will beat out who for the automatic bid to NXN.

10) Edina (H) 7.5 - Won the Lakeville Applejack Invite with 33 points and a tight spread.

11) Broomfield (SW) 7 - Last week they finished runner up to Mountain Vista at the Liberty Bell Invite.  Just a one minute spread of them, but still not close enough to challenge MV. The spot for the second auto bid to NXN in the SW region is getting tighter. Hosted a home meet this past week but ran their JV up to varsity.

12) Saratoga Springs (NY) 7.5 - Still looking to see where Saratoga belongs on this list.

13) Chandler (SW) 7 - Chandler improved the past two weeks winning the Ojo Rojos invite this past weekend without their ace and placing fourth at the Cool Breeze Invite two weeks ago (only 21 points behind first place Claremont and 8 points behind Serrano who was 3rd this weekend at Woodbridge).

14) Southlake Carroll (S) 7.5 - Took the long trip out to Woodbridge and finished a respectable fourth, but averaged over 30 seconds slower than Buchanan and Great Oak.

15) Weddington (SE) 7.5 - Taking the surprise win at Adidas XC Challenge, Weddington is getting it done with a 43 second pack. They beat runner-up Chapel Hill by 30 points as well as ranked Blacksburg by over 40.

16) Bozeman (NW) 7- Clicking away in Montana, Bozeman wins the Great Falls XC Invite against local competition.

17) Davis (CA) 7 - Placed third at the Joshua Ruff Invite but only two of their top 7 runners raced.

18) Blacksburg (SE) 6.5 - Blacksburg takes a big tumbes after finishing 3rd at Adidas XC Challenge behind Weddington and Chapel Hill.  This is a championship caliber program that knows how to run fast when it counts, though, so they will remain ranked for the time being.

19) Sunset (NW) 6.5 - It could be that Sunset is training through the early season as they won a local quad meet with 17 points but the spread has gotten wider at almost 2 minutes. They will need to improve drastically in the next few weeks to remain in the discussion for an at large spot.

20) Shenendehowa (NY) 6.5 - Shen is another team needing to make a statement soon in order to be in the running for an at-large spot.  We will know after the McQuaid Invite in two weeks where they stand.

21) Champlain Valley (NE) 7.5 - Finished runner-up to Niskayuna last weekend at the Shaker Invite.

22) Colts Neck (NE) 6.5 - Only one member of the returning top 5 competed at grade races this past week at Battle @ Ocean Park.  New Jersey still seems to be open with a couple top teams not showing their cards yet.
