Nikki Robinson, jewelry artist, NTRINSIC
Jewelry artist Nikki Robinson (NTRINSIC) recently had her work featured in Omaha Fashion Week. With more projects ahead, she shares with LFF about her "seamlessly weird, yet quirky custom jewelry," her path to starting NTRINSIC, her thoughts on feminism and more...
Are you from Omaha?
Native of Chicago, IL and moved to Omaha, NE in 2008 and eventually married the most amazing man in the world (Dewayne Robinson).
How did you get into jewelry making?
I always had an eye for fashion, even at a young age (I can remember my mom saying, “Nikki, there is something different about you”). I was a little 7- year-old tomboy; pairing a big, yellow Easter dress with a pair of red stockings on a hot, summer day in Chicago, eager to play outside with my friends. LOL! I realize though, that my talents and abilities come only from God! He is the one that allows this seamlessly weird, yet quirky, custom jewelry to come alive. The cool thing is, Christ is the one that molds and shapes my mindset so that I’m able to write the vision down and make it plain.
Tell me about NTRINSIC and why its important to you.
I started NTRINSIC in 2011 after getting married. I truly prayed about my future and what I wanted, and this interesting creativity started flowing. I was a bit reluctant at first because it was new, but then people started to inquire about my unique handmade pieces. Some of my fabrics are handmade from places like Burkina Faso, Africa. They were given to me because someone believed in the vision. So, I was truly able to say “I want everything I do to be custom”. Creatively speaking, a lot of people “make jewelry” but I am truly PASSIONATE! I love creating OUT THE BOX Couture pieces. I love allowing the creativity that Christ has given to me to flow out of me. I like to call it being a “misFit” (lol). When the natural eye says, “those pieces doesn’t go together”, your hands begin to create something custom and unique. I love saying, “who wants to walk around wearing the SAME thing someone else has on”? Not me! Lol. Fashion isn’t being able to whip up something quick to get quick money, but it’s being able to design something original and unforgettable.
Does feminism play a role in your work?
I do not call myself a feminist. I am secure and confident in who I am in Christ, and the abilities He has given to me, do you? Personally, feminism does not play a role in my work. I believe God created us to be equal; both male and female. I don’t believe “men are more talented than women” or vice versa. I believe God gives each individual their own gift/talent and calling to function in for the areas He’s called them to. Each of us has been given an equal right to fulfill a role in life. My work is influenced by God and passion for the gifts that he’s placed inside of me.
How was Omaha Fashion Week?
NTRINSIC was featured in Omaha Fashion Week; First ever Hair, Make-up and Accessories Show. What a great time, seeing my jewelry rip the runway! Now with a more paced schedule, I am currently working on a few projects. For example, my new website, www.ntrinsicfashion.com, as well as a spring Couture Collection for my jewelry. Super excited about playing around with some unique colors and abstract pieces. For now, until my website is ready, check me out on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/NtrinsicFashion?ref=hl.
