“inside of the add violence machine”? elaborate, i’m intrigued.

Gladly! Basically, evidence suggests that the scenario described in NIN’s ARG concept album Year Zero is a simulation being run on the machine on the cover of their EP Add Violence.

First of all, it’s a whole machine. We get to see more of it in the “This Is Not The Place” music video, in the reference guide, and on the back cover of the vinyl shown below. The front cover is cropped from the bottom right.

There are certain details connecting the projects. (Not mentioning super deep ARG-specific details. )

The video for “This Is Not The Place” features a drug from the Year Zero ARG, and it was made in collaboration with the same people behind the Year Zero ARG, 42 Entertainment

The physical component mentions the Presence, the hand in Year Zero’s cover and the voice in “The Warning”, multiple times(!)

THE PHYSICAL COMPONENT 🤤 Most of the evidence is in the physical component for Add Violence, the Panel K quick reference guide. Feel free to explore it on your own, but I’ll discuss some parts of it here:

Most of it lists and discusses the components on the panel we see. Their names alone, like SIMULATION ON, ABORT, etc imply that it manages a simulation of some sort, and the other components like ANXIETY, MORALE, DISORDER, SATISFACTION, suggest individuals are being simulated.

The component descriptions refers to a superstructure, which appears to be humanity itself, and self-aware substructures, SASs, which are likely individuals. Without seeing exactly each console displays, particular components (which i’ll capitalize) and their descriptions on the console seem relevant to the events of Year Zero, a

highly DISORDERed,

stressed (ANXIETY) and

technologically advanced (towards “transcendence”; climbing the KARDASHEV scale, which the panel finds relevant)

society

with a TERMINATING EVENT,

taking place in a time loop (SHORT TERM RESET)

with increasing violence (the STASIS MODULATOR is set to ADD VIOLENCE),

with a PRESENCE who interferes.

The Presence’s mention in the guide is most solid piece of evidence; in relation to the Presence, the manual directly refers the machine as able to connect up to four controllers for “interference during normal operations”. So the Presence is likely just someone operating with the console and interfering with the simulation. that would explain why it’s. like that.

There is probably evidence in the music also, like maybe

— The song “This Is Not The Place” referencing “Zero Sum” in its instrumental and “In This Twilight” in the title

And the longing that you feel

You know none of this is real. <- 😳

You will find a better a place” <- but This Is Not It

Really, “In This Twilight” is *the* This is a simulation / This can be prevented song. Look into the ARG for more details on that.

— YZ’s penultimate track “Zero Sum” -> “Less Than” as AV’s first track feels pertinent

— “Zero Sum” says:

And all we ever were

Just zeros and ones

which is thematically relevant (We citizens, humans, are treated as objects, statistics, pawns, by the the powers that be, and all of this fighting equates to Nothing, Mutually Assured Destruction, 1 - 1 = 0), plot relevant (and regardless [none of that matters anymore] because the world is over. Also, clearly we’re insignificant to the universe because the Presence exists—is it God? Aliens?) and literal—they’re in a computer! They were code all along :3
