A little drabble to make Nina’s day brighter...sorta... Inspired by Josh Groban’s “Awake”
A beautiful and blinding morning
The world outside begins to breathe
Their lives together had begun in a whirlwind, a chance meeting that led to so many more. She hadn’t expected it to grow into what it had. Days spent together eventually led to nights. Although neither really spoke of it, Roxy had a feeling that their first night together had startled Augustine just as much as it had her. With him, she felt as if a whole new world had been presented before her, one where she could be free to be herself and be loved because of that. It only cemented her adoration.
See clouds arriving without warning
I need you here to shelter me
And I know that only time will tell us how
To carry on without each other
She knew it wouldn’t last forever. He was mortal. She was not. She would be forced to watch as time worked inexorably on him and leave her in that frozen present in which all her kind existed. And yet, she regretted not a moment, only wishing to cling tighter to him with what time she had.
So keep me awake to memorize you
Give me more time to feel this way
We can't stay like this forever
But I can have you next to me today
That had been many years ago today, that first meeting that had progressed into what they had now. Decades and yet it had been hardly more than a blink for the sprite. How had the time passed so fast? Sometimes it almost felt like just yesterday she had confessed her love and he his.
“What’s on your mind, mon flamme?”
The weakened voice called her attention the present and the redhead glanced up and over at the man lying in bed. Where once thick black hair lay, only silver wisps remained now to frame a lined face where smiles once rested. Time and illness had worked their magic on him, leaving him physically half the man he had been. It had done nothing to the mind behind those beautiful blue eyes, the intelligence and forceful personality behind the failing body keeping her entranced through all these years.
If I could make these moments endless
If I could stop the winds of change
If we just keep our eyes wide open
Then everything would stay the same
“Nothin’ much, sweetheart.” Roxy reached out to touch his cheek, his skin cool beneath her palm. She knew she wouldn’t have much longer with him. “Just how much I love you, really.”
His eyes had closed again, his breath rattling in a chest too thin by half. For a long moment Roxy believed he had dozed off again. He surprised her by speaking again, the cloudy blue eyes opening to fix on her, a smile on his lips. “An old man like me?”
She laughed and bent over to press a kiss to his forehead. “You’ve only exchanged your outer appearance, Augustine.” She murmured. “You’re the same man you’ve always been and my feelings have never changed.”
We'll let tomorrow wait, you're here, right now, with me
All my fears just fall away, when you are all I see
“I…love you too, mon flamme,” His eyes fluttered closed, his breathing slowing.
“….sleep well, sweetheart.”
We can't stay like this forever
But I have you here today
And I will remember
Oh I will remember
Remember all the love we shared today
